July/August 2017 Anniversariesareimportantcelebrationsmarkingsignificantmilestonesonthisjourneycalledlife.Together,wehereatProspect/MarvinChapelhaveaccomplishedsuchamilestone,oneyearofworking,praying,laughing,learningandcollaboratingtogether.Alothashappenedoverthepastyear,toomuchtosummarizehere,butithasbeenawonderfuljourneysofar.Youmaynotremembermyveryfirstsermonayearago,whichwasentitled,ShallWeDance?Together!Atthattime,IsharedthatIlovedlinedancingandhaveregularlyattendedaclassforthepastthreeyears.Aftermyback

injurylastyear,ittookafewmonthsbeforeIwasabletogoback.WhenIdid,Iwasoutofpracticemakingmis-stepsandfeelingveryuncoordinated,butwithtimeIgotbackintotherhythm.Webeganourdancetogetherfeelingabituncoordinatedandmadeafewmis-stepsalongtheway,butI’msogladthatwehavebeenworkingtogethertoper-fectourdance.Whilewearenotperfect,wehavebeguntofigureouteachother’srhythms.Wehavelearnedtodeterminewhowillleaddifferentministries,andwhoshouldfollow.Wearelearninghowtomanagemistakes,andevenlearningtoovercomesteppingoneachother'stoes.Manyhavechosentostaythecourseandjoinin,whilesomehaveleftandwemissthem.Andwhilewearedoing

agoodjob,westillhavemoretolearn.Wecan’tstopencouragingeachother.Wecan’tstoptalkingtogether,becausethat’swhenwestartstumbling.Wehavesomeroughpathsahead,butbyworkingtogether,wewillmakeitthrough.1Corinthians12tellsusthateverymemberisimportantandanindispensibleparttothewell-beingofthebody.Nooneismoreimportantthananother,therefore,nooneislessimportantthananother.Verse27remindsusthat“Ifonepartsuffers,allthepartssufferwithit;ifonepartgetstheglory,allthepartscelebratewithit.ItisonlythroughthegraceofGodthateachpartbelongsandworkswelltogether,andthat’swhatwecelebrate.Mayweberemindedthatinallweundertaketodotogether,whetherinwordordeed,thatwecontinuetodoeverythingtoglorifyGod,tobeChrist-like,andtoallowtheHolySpirittoguideouractions.ThewordsinpartfromJudyChicagointheMergerPoemonaplaqueinProspectLibrary-(givenbySuzannePorter-Missionary2000-2012),providesinspirationforourgoalofworkingtogether:

Andthenallthathasdivideduswillmerge

Andthencompassionwillbeweddedtopower

Andthenallwillcareforthesickandtheweakandtheold

AndthenallwillnourishtheyoungAndthenallwillcherishlife’screatureAndthenallwillliveinharmonywitheachotherandtheearth

AndtheneverywherewillbecalledEdenonceagain.

TogetherwehavedonemarvelousworkandIamexcitedlylookingforwardtogaininghigherheightsasweexploreandenjoythisnextyear.Letuscontinueforwardwithcompassion,kindness,hospitality,humility,gentleness,patienceandmostofalllove.Enjoyasafeandhealthysummer!

OnApril30th,thewomenofProspect-MarvinChapelChargeparticipatedinaworshipservicecelebratingthewomenoftheCharge.PastorLorrainewelcomedMrs.RitaGreen,SpiritualGrowthCoordinatorfortheUMWoftheBaltimore-WashingtonConference,asthespeakeroftheday.

The1stannualDorcasAwardswerepresentedbyPastorLorraine,DebiConstantinidesandPatAhalt,UMW

co-presidents,toJoanDerr,RhondaStevensandMyrnaHighlandfromMarvinChapel,andAliceHancock,BettyLeatherwoodandLauraSchmidtfromProspect.

AtajointserviceonJune4th,RickandMaryAnneSmithblessedbothcongregationswithaslideshowandpresentationdescribingtheirmissionoutreach,“AisforAfrica.”

OurNativeAmericanRepresentative,MyrnaHighland,presentedamessageonJune18th,

TheHelpingHandsCommitteerepresentativesfromMarvinChapelandProspectmetinMaytodiscusstheworkofthecommittee.PastorLorrainediscussedthecompletionoftheupdatedchurchdirectory.ThenewdirectorywasavailablefordistributioninJune.Ifyouhavenotreceivedyourcopy,pleasecallthechurchphoneoroneofthemembersofProspectorMarvinChapeltorequestyourcopy.Thecommitteereviewedthefinalizedquestionnaireandsignedoffonfinalizingit.ThequestionnairewasdistributedthefirstSundayofJuneatthejointworshipservice.Wearetryingtoreachallmembers,everypersonwhoisamember.Tothosewhohavee-mailaddresses,acopywase-mailedfromthechurchaccount.Ifyouhavenotcompletedone,pleasecallthechurchphoneoroneofthemembersofProspectorMarvinChapeltorequestyourcopy.WediscussedpreparingforthenextUMCORkitassemblyandhavesetthesummertocollectmaterialsandpreparekitsinSeptember.Alistofneededsupplieswillbecompiledandincludedinthebulletin,andavailableinbothchurches.Sign-upsheetswillbemadeavailableinbothchurches.MaryBehannaatProspectandPennyLeoatMarvinChapelwillbeleadingtheeffort.PastorLorrainediscussedsettingupvisitationstoourlimitedactivitymembersinJuly.PennyLeowillbeprovidedwiththepastors’scheduletobegintoarrangetimestovisitwiththevariousindividualswhowillaccompanyher.Wearegladthatthosewhohavenotbeenfeelingwellhave

TheChildren’sMinistryhasbeenalittlebumpythelasttwomonthsduetospecialservicesandabsencesofthechildren.WeareplanningonmeetingwiththechildrenonemoretimeinJulytosharewiththemthechildweadoptedthroughCompassion,andtobringthepastyeartoclosure.TheChildren’sMinistryteamwillmeetwithPastorLorrainethissummertoplanforthefall.WehopetoresumewiththechildreninSeptember.Untilthen,besafethissummer.

OnPentecostSunday,atimewhenthediscipleswerecommandedtogoforthandspreadthegospel,weheardhowtheHolySpirithasbeenmovingthrough‘AisforAfrica’to‘goforth’withourworn-outshoes,toberefurbishedbyandforMaasaifamilies.WeweresoinspiredtohearhowthisoutreachhasbenefittedtheschoolchildrenofTanzaniathatwecollectedaloveoffering,enoughtoprovide5schooluniformsforsomeofthechildren.Thankstoallwhohavedonatedandpleasekeepthoseoldshoescoming!~submittedbyLauraSchmidt,chair

"WeareOne:ConnectedinCovenant"wasthethemeforthisannualconference.BishopEasterling,thefirstwomantoleadtheBaltimore-WashingtonConferenceopenedthe233rdsession,May31-June2,atWardmanParkHotel,DC.Priortotheopeningsession,laitygatheredtogetherinaseparatesession.BishopEasterlingexpressedaneedtoelevateclergy-laypartnershipindiscipleship.Conferenceopenedwithover1,400UnitedMethodistsandfourlanguagesallsinging"They'llKnowWeAreChristiansByOurLove."TheBishopspokeofGod,whocallsuponthefaithfultotrustandobey,turnawayfromtheold,andtowalkwithGodtowardasacredandbrightfuture.Sheremindedusthatwewillbefacingsomeharddecisionsinthenearfuture.WewerethenunitedinCommunion.TheBiblestudysessionsfocusedonEphesians4:1-6andPaul'sthoughtsaboutChristiansasGod'sartworkandsignsofhope.“ThechurchistheinstrumentofGod’smissionintheworld…andwhentheworldlooksatthechurch,itshouldgetaglimpseofGod’sKingdom.”Congregationsmakefourpromisesinthebaptismalcovenanttolove,serveandcareforeachother,whichheurgedchurchestokeepvisiblewhilediscussingGod’svisionforthechurch.Animportantpartofannualsessionisholyconferencing,atimeofconversationanddebate,shapingthenatureandpoliciesofthechurch.Duringthesessions,manyissueswerediscussedoverthetwodays.Fourresolutions,andfiveamendmentsto

thedenomination’sconstitutionwerevotedon.Someoftheseincluded1)thepassingofaresolutiontobecomeamemberoftheReligiousCoalitiononReproductiveChoice;2)thechoicetoparticipateinaconference-wideboycottofHewlettPackardproductsuntilthecompanyceasestoprofitfromtheIsrael-Palestineconflict;3)revisingtheconferencemovingpolicysothatretireeshavethesamemovingbenefitsasactiveclergy;4)officiallyclosing2Baltimorechurches;5)unanimouslyapprovingthe2018budgetof$18.4million,$14.3millionofwhichareapportionments.A2%increaseforfull-timeclergywasalsoapproved.Inaddition,Healthinsurancepremiumswillbegoingupin2018.OnThursdaynight,theBishopcommissionedoneDeacon,nineElders,andordainedsevenEldersintofullconferencemembership.Thecelebrationoftheordinationandcommissioningwasheartfelttoseeinpersonandwasoverwhelmedwithjoy.Amemorialservicewasheldinhonorofthosewhohavepast-awayoverthepastyear.Duringouropeningworshipceremonies,eachpersonwasgivenoneofeightdifferentcoloredstreamerstoparticipateinacelebrationofpraiseandexaltation.Theeightcolorsrepresentedtheeightspecificcolorsofeachdistrictinourconference.Duringtheclosingsession,thesestreamerswerealltiedtogether,unitingusandremindingusthatweareallchildrenofGod.
