Reflection A promise made and fulfilled - the Advocate, power from on high which the Master promised as he
ascended is today poured out on all the disciples and they immediately set out on the mission of the Master:
renewing the face of the earth. While the coming of the Messiah aimed at the restoration of the 'peace of
Eden', the outpouring of the Holy Spirit achieved the unification of the confused languages of the Tower of
Babel for that renewal mission: "But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were
building. The Lord said... come let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each
other." (Gen.11:5-8).
On Pentecost day, this was reversed. "And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong
driving wind ...At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard
them speaking in his own language ..." (1st reading). While the first confusion scattered people all over the
face of the earth and brought about the abandonment of mission (building of the tower), the later confusion
that the Pentecost crowd experienced was positive and unifying: "For in one Spirit we were all baptized into
one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons ..." (2nd reading) The goal is unity of purpose that
see each person bringing different kinds of spiritual gifts or forms of service for the benefit of all and the
result is a world where all understand each other without judgment or critique, without distinctions that create
barriers between us and them.
The mission is simple: to renew the face of the earth. It is the continuation of the mission of the
Master: restoration of the peace of Eden: "... Jesus came ... and said to them, 'Peace be with you’.... As the
Father has sent me, so I send you" (Gospel). To achieve peace, he gave them one of the greatest tools:
forgiveness - whose sins you forgive are forgiven. Forgiveness is prove of love. And both the incarnation of
second person of the Trinity (Word made flesh) and the outpouring of the third person of the Trinity
(Pentecost) are signs of God’s release of love in its purest form symbolized by fire, wind, sound and silence.
In these God trusted Himself with us, entering into our chaos.

1st Reading ACTS 2:1 1-11 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.
Responsorial Psalm PS 104:1, 24,29-30, 31, 34
R. (cf. 30) Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face
of the earth.
Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD, my God, you are
great indeed! How manifold are your works, O Lord!
the earth is full of your creatures;
R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the
earth.
May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the
LORD be glad in his works! Pleasing to him be my
theme; I will be glad in the LORD.
R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the
earth.
If you take away their breath, they perish and return to
their dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are
created, and you renew the face of the earth.
R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the
earth.
2nd Reading 1 COR 12:3B-7, 12-13
Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.
Gospel JN 20:19-23
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”
St. Vincent DePaul If you are needing help or groceries, please confidentially call 618-318-6765 to see if our St.
Vincent DePaul Society can help you.
Reflection-Continued Like the apostles, you too have received the Holy
Spirit. You may not speak in tongues but you can
speak a language that everybody will understand. You
can speak the language of love, the language of peace,
the language of tolerance, the language of forgiveness.
Like God, you can take the risk of entrusting yourself
to the other person, entering into his or her chaos in a
Jesus mission that seeks to create reconciliation where
none was thought possible, and ignite hope where
there was only disappointment and despair.
If he has sent you, will you go? Where will
you go today? Which door will you burst open like the
apostles did to reach a soul, a heart that has longed to
hear you speak those magic words: I forgive you? Go!
The tongues of fire have ignited you. Cooperate with
the Spirit and fan it into a flame of love. If this power
from on high could transform a band of cowering
fishermen and tax collectors into preachers,
missionaries, converters, apologists, who charge out
into the world without fear to renew it with Jesus’
good news, we too on this Pentecost day can be
energized to continue that mission in our own
generation that need the same good news now more
than ever. So go ahead, take the risk, dare to dream!
And why is that? Because the Holy Spirit frees us
from whatever binds us, holds us back from God who
is love, Christ who is love, made flesh.
God bless you!
We are working on a reopening plan
provided by the diocese, we need more
volunteers to help with this! You must be
of non vulnerable age and health,

help.
Pentecost Sunday (at the Mass during the Day) – Sunday, 31 May 2020
Acts 2:1-11. Psalm 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34. 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13. Sequence – Veni, Sancte Spiritus / Come, Holy Spirit, come! John 20:19-23.
Many and One. There are many spiritual gifts and many forms of service. True. But there is one Spirit, one Lord, one God making it all possible. And one Church – many people made one because of Baptism into Christ. He is the Risen One, standing in our midst, saying: “Peace be with you.”
• Because of Baptism, what gifts do I have?
• How will these gifts spill over into service, into mercy works?
• How can I share the peace of Christ with one or two others this week?
Sequence Veni, Sancte Spiritus
Come, Holy Spirit, come! And from your celestial home Shed a ray of light divine! Come, Father of the poor! Come, source of all our store! Come, within our bosoms shine. You, of comforters the best; You, the soul’s most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe. O most blessed Light divine, Shine within these hearts of yours, And our inmost being fill! Where you are not, we have naught, Nothing good in deed or thought, Nothing free from taint of ill. Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away: Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray. On the faithful, who adore And confess you, evermore In your sevenfold gift descend; Give them virtue’s sure reward; Give them your salvation, Lord; Give them joys that never end. Amen. Alleluia.
Alleluia
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of your love.
R. Alleluia, alleluia
