Goal

To expand our conception of

“mass media” and develop a team

to engage it

What do we mean by “media”..?

Mass media types:“Mainstream”

Mainstream:

• National: New York Times / Wall Street Journal / CBS / MSNBC / PBS/NPR…

• State level: LA Times/SF Chronicle / Sacramento Bee/San Diego Union-Tribune…

• Local level: Santa Cruz Sentinel / Registered Pajaronian/La Opinion/UCLA Bruin/Local PBS and NPR stations…

How to reach the mainstream media?

1. Personal contacts!

2. Personal contacts!

3. Personal contacts!

We can do it!

• One physician/advocate teamlet in each city, town, community

• Make an appointment with Editor

• Make yourself available as a resource (no need to become “friends”, just “a good, reliable resource”)

The “Other” media

• Examples: –Church, neighborhood, school newsletters–Weekly / monthly freebies–Cable channels–Electronic “viral media”: Facebook, Twitter…

• Their “reach”:–San Leandro Times: more people read it than read the

Chronicle!

• The good news:–Always craving for news! “Earned” (free) media!

The strength of “other” media

But…what can I offer them?

• Yourself as a resource

• Your comments

• Letters to the Editor

• Your own presentation! Use 30 second video clips from OneCareNow to start a conversation
