Responsibility charting The RACI technique has been designed to identify

functional areas, key activities and provides management with decision points where ambiguities exist.

The approach enables management to actively participate in the process of systematically describing: - activities - decisions to be accomplished - clarity of responsibilities

RACI Overview

•  The purpose of the RACI process is to answer the following questions . . .

•  What functions, activities, and tasks must be performed •  Who must perform them and what is their level of involvement

•  RACI is a highly participative process that ensures ownership of the responsibilities

Responsible-‐Accountable-‐Consulted-‐Informed

Type/Degree of Participation Can Be Defined

Individual(s)  (Many)  who  perform  an  acIvity  or  take  part  in  a  decision—responsible  for  acIon/implementaIon.  Responsibility  can  be  shared.  The  degree  of  responsibility  is  determined  by  the  individual  with  the  “A”

Responsible “Doer”

Accountable “Buck Stops

Here”

Consulted “In the Loop”

Informed “FYI”

Individual  (One!!)  who  has  ulImate  decision  making  and  approval  authority.  Typically  the  owner  of  the  budget.

Individual(s)  (Many)  who  need  to  have  input  into  a  decision  or  acIon  before  it  occurs.  This incorporates two way communication Individual(s)  (Many)  who  must  be  informed  that  a  decision  or  acIon  has  taken  place.  This is one way communication.

Guidelines •  Place accountability (A) and responsibility (R) at the level

closest to the action •  There can only be one accountability (A) per activity •  Authority must accompany accountability •  Minimise the number of consults (C) and informs (I) •  All roles and responsibilities must be documented and

communicated RACI A – accountable The buck stops here – yes/no authority R – responsible The doer – working on the activity C – consult In the loop – involved prior to decision/action I – Inform Keep in the picture – needs to know of the

decision/action
