What is Animatronics?

Animatronics is the use of electronics and robotics in

the creation of puppets which simulate life.

It is a multi-disciplinary field which integrates anatomy,

robots, mechatronics and puppetry resulting in the

lifelike animation of any living or lifeless object.

How it began…. Animatronics made cinematic history long before digital

effects were around.

It was first introduced in movies by Walt Disney in 1963

Today it is used in films parallel with VFX, museums,

advertisements and many more.

of animatronics

in the plot

• Sketching the artwork

and acknowledgement

The model Artwork The Art Team develops the

model and acknowledges

with the director for further

work

The Feasibility of a larger

structure is studied by

design engineers

Director Joe Johnston and the one-

fifth-scale maquette of the Spinosaurus

from jurassic park III

The framework Holds the body

Allows motion as per the scene

Uses steel, wood, polycarbonate or lighter plastics

Live working on the framework

Driving Mechanism The characters may be driven either mechanically or by

human force

The mechanically driven character is remotely

controlled by RF (radio signals)

For small structure, electric motors, and for larger

structure we use hydraulics or pneumatics

Spinosaurus being

scaled with epoxy mold

Spinosaurus from

Jurassic park III, Stan

Winston studios

To make the character lifelike, body artwork is essential

Clay, paint, latex, silicone, polyurethane rubber, plaster are the materials generally used

For creating body patterns, a set of molds made of durable epoxy is used

Body Art

In Motion

The characters are programmed to play their roles in

the respective scene

Their timing and control is handled with the help of

microcontroller

With the help of compliance, we can allow more faster,

more realistic movements without sacrificing control

over the character
