Program Updates

John Bilotta, Water ResourceManagement and Policy ExtensionEducator, went off to sea! Bilottawas one of 28 selected from anational search to participate inNOAA's Teacher­at­Sea program.Bilotta's research cruise in Junespanned the edge of thecontinental shelf between PortCanaveral, FL, and Cape Hatteras,NC. The team aboard the R/VNancy Foster conducted surveys inand around five marine protectedareas in the south Atlantic tosupport fisheries managementobjectives. The 24/7 work scheduleincluded collecting water chemistryprofiles and mapping. Bilotta isdeveloping a pilot K­12 lesson planon oceans and ecosystems basedon his experiences.

Bilotta said, "If you haven't heardfrom me after July 4th, I eitherchose to stay on board or I just sank to thebottom because I did not put myNOAA Immersion Suit on correctly."

Hilarie Sorensen, Climate Change Extension Educator, became a full­time AssistantExtension Professor in April. Sorensen is helping Sea Grant to develop science­based responses to changing climatic conditions in communitiesrimming the edge of Lake Superior in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Over the past year,Sorensen worked on climate change adaptation and mitigation concerns part­time forSea Grant. Given the extent of community needs, Sea Grant posted a jobannouncement for a full­time Climate Change Extension Educator in February.

Sorensen earned a Master's of Environmental Studies from Lakehead University,Ontario, Canada. Her expertise is in coastal hazard resiliency and climate adaptationplanning. Sorensen continues to operate out of Minnesota Sea Grant's main office at theUniversity of Minnesota Duluth. Minnesota Sea Grant's Climate Change ExtensionEducator position is funded by NOAA, University of Minnesota Extension and the EPA

William French, conservationbiology doctoral candidate at theUniversity of Minnesota, won the2014 Best Student Paper Award atthe Minnesota Chapter of theAmerican Fisheries Society. Theaward comes with a $250 prizeand is sponsored by Minnesota SeaGrant. French's paper, Using stableisotope analyses to examinerelative position of brown trout inwinter food webs of SoutheasternMinnesota streams, was co­authored by Bruce Vondracek,Leonard Ferrington, Jacques Finlay,and Douglas Dieterman.
