Participants based in France are
required to teach English to
children and/or adults in French
families. Classes are conducted in
an informal way, with conversation
and writing for adults and games
for the younger children. The
general organization will all depend
on the family’s needs
Each participant will be required to
teach 15-hours per week,
Monday through Friday, the time of
day determined with the host
family. Tutors are expected to
come up with creative, fun and
informative lesson plans.
Placements are available
throughout the year and all over
France, from North to South!
Programs are one to three months
long.
Participants must be at least 18
years old up to…60 +, they
have earned at least a high
school diploma (secondary
school), are in good health and
agree to abide by the family’s
rules and habits.
Prior knowledge in French (at
least 2 years of study) is
strongly recommended.
Weekends are open to explore
the community, travel to other
parts of France, or go on
weekend excursions with the
family.
BenefitsThis is a great program for people who want to experience the life and culture of France in-depth. A program focused on cultural exchange, the host families are not only excited to learn and improve their English skills, but also to share the characteristics of their country, culture and cuisine!
Accommodation Tutors will be living with a French volunteer host family. Each participant will have their own room and the homes will be clean and comfortable.
What not to expect
This program is not a modified version of an Au Pair or “domestic helper”
program. Volunteer tutors are however encouraged to engage in the daily
routine of the household, such as helping to clean or cook with the host family.
Program Overview
Teaching Aids
Tutors should be prepared to teach English
with specific activities for teaching a family
within the home. Consider what teaching aids
would be most helpful.
Participants will tutor for 15 hours per week so
they must be organized. They should be
prepared to teach conversational English in
particular. Participants will need to take the
initiative to plan and prepare the lessons.
Prior to leaving the country, it is possible to
email the host family in France to find out their
level of English in order to prepare accordingly.
The internet can be a great resource- simple
lesson plans can be downloaded and modified.
Books: children’s books, nursery rhymes and
songbooks are great for younger family
members. Young adult books can be beneficial
for those who speak an advanced level of
English.
Games: Any games from home can be useful
for tutoring children and adults alike – Guess
who, Boggle, Alphabet Cards, Scrabble, etc.
You can also engage the family in outdoor
games such as Frisbee, jump rope, catch, etc.
CDs/Music: You may have access to a CD
player or speakers in your home. Songs with
distinct and clear lyrics, such as children’s
music or pop songs, are great for teaching.
Teaching Guides: Tutors may be required to
teach grammar to some of the more advanced
English speakers. It might be worth taking a
reference book as a guide.
There are plenty of books on teaching English
as a foreign language. These are available in
most large bookstores or online. It is advisable
to bring one of these books for when inspiration
is needed.
It is highly recommended that the tutor brings other teaching resources. The point of the program is to teach English to your host family!
