PRESEREVED HUMAN REMAINS

WHAT IS A PHR?

PHR are human remains that have been preserved, by accident or on purpose.

By human remains we mean; skeletons as well as additions: skin, hair, organs, clothes, artefacts etc

There are many ways a body can be preserved

by accident.

These include:

ICE

THE ICEMAN

BOGS OR MARSHES

WINDEBY GIRL

CAVES

LEMONGROVE GIRL

SAND

HOW ARE PRH MADE?

A PHR is created when a body was put in a place where no air or moisture could get to it. Lack of air and moisture delays the

decaying process and mummifies the body.

MAKING PHR ON PURPOSE

The two most famous ways of creating PHR on purpose are:

MUMMIFICATION

FREEZING

MUMMIFICATION

Is the oldest way to preserve humans and other living things.

The most famous “mummies” come from Ancient Egypt.

Some of these mummies are:

TUTANKHAMEN

RAMSES THE GREAT

MUMMIFICATION

The mummification process used by the Egyptians lasted for 90 days. The steps were as follows:

1. Embalming

2. Removal of Brain

3. Removal of Internal Organs

4. Drying Out Process

5. Wrapping of the Body

6. Final Procession

CRYOGENIC FREEZING

The is a relatively new process where a body is frozen in the hope of reviving it in the future.

Your body is frozen using liquid nitrogen at stored at –220 degrees C

The only drawback is that it doesn’t actually work yet!!

OTHER MODERN PHR

There are other people around the world who have had their bodies frozen. Some of these are famous politicians whose bodies are on display in important locations around the world.

Some of these people include:

LENIN - 1924

STALIN - 1953

HO CHI MIHN - 1969

MAO TSE TUNG - 1976

PLACES TO FIND PHR

PHR have been found all over the place.

Most of the most famous places include: Egypt England Denmark Russia Australia South America China

THIS UNIT

This unit we are going to look at PHR from around the world. We are first going to look closely at the ICEMAN – where he was found, when, how, by who etc.We are then going to widen our study with individual looks at different mummies from all over the place.
