Declining Population Characteristics Have a Direct Effect on:

Reproductive Health Characteristics o Fertility rates. o Reproductive tract infections & sexually transmitted diseases. o Neonatal, infant, child and maternal mortalities. o Life expectancy.

Sexually Reproductive Health & Poverty Poverty is associated with large family size in the poorest

countries with the highest population growth rates.

Poverty is one of the main precipitating factors of unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, maternal mortality, violence, STIs/HIV, exploitation, and discrimination or gender identity.

12

In developing countries, more than 40% of girls have their first child before they reach the age of 20 which may force them to drop out of school or to stop working outside the

home, thus risking a fall into deeper poverty.
