Pre-Site Visit Preparation: the creation of field maps for the basin area using GIS

Students:Mary Strazer Magnea IngolfsdottirProject partners: Herrera Environmental Consultants Inc.

The Project

• Roughly 35,000 people of Northern, Haiti living and working in the vicinity of Les Moustiques river, are seasonally inundated by flood waters.

• Engineers from Herrera Consultants Inc. are planning a site visit to the area to assess the situation and create design alternatives.

• Before they go, they need a set of field maps of the basin area.

Objectives

It was our task to create GIS maps of the basin and watershed surrounding Les Moustiques in Haiti. In order to complete this task we needed to delineate the Riviere Moustiques drainage basin (watersheds, sub-basins, and streams), and develop georeferenced GIS maps of la plain de Moustiques.

How We Built the Maps

First, we converted the point data of the contours into a surface using the spatial analyst interpolate to raster tool

Secondly, we used the spatial analyst hydrology tool and the raster calculator to create the watershed, basins, and streams.

Thirdly, we georeferenced our aerial photo to our contoured data.
