POWERCO LTD - GAS SCADA SYSTEM | CASE STUDY

New Zealand’s Natural Gas reserves liepredominantly off the west coast of the NorthIsland near the province of Taranaki. Thesereserves supply energy to Power Generators,industry and homes across the country.

Powerco awarded Abbey Systems a significantcontract in 2009 for the supply of a SCADAsystem monitoring key gas distribution sites inthe network. These sites regulate the supplypressures and flows into the network.

The system supplied uses GSM cellular forcommunications between the SCADA Masterand remote sites. It also uses 3G cellular tosecurely link the On Duty Operators with theSCADA Master so that they can view andcontrol the network assets from their laptops,any time day or night.

SCADA Products Used

Aspex TM SCADA software is used for the display of theremote site monitoring status and trends. It is able todisplay both realtime and time stamped datalogged filesretrieved from the RTU periodically, either manually orautomatically.

Advanced Trending allows users to pan, zoom, use a cursorand print a trend screen for reference.

Aspex is able to import graphics files from GIS and otherpackages to supplement the screens or as the start pointfor developing new screens.

Swampfox RTUs are installed at all the remote sites(approx 80 to date). Swampfox has PLC and Dataloggingfunctionality meaning it can act autonomously from theSCADA Master using programs, and also time stamp andstore measurements and statuses for later retrieval.

Should an Alarm condition occur e.g. Low or High pressureor Door Alarm activation, Swampfox immediately initiatescommunications to the SCADA Master to update it with theevent. A number of inbuilt parameters are also monitoredand reported on periodically.
