A 3-dimensional geometric solid with flat faces, straight edges, and sharp corners
Word comes from Classic Greek where poly = “many”, hedron = “base” or “seat”
Plural form: polyhedra or polyhedrons
What exactly is a polyhedron?
Polyhedron Examples
Hexahedron Tetrahedron Octahedron Dodecahedron
Octagonal PrismSmall StellatedDodecahedron
GreatCubicuboctahedron
Icosidodecahedron
Materials
Materials:• Rhombus template tracer• Pencil• Construction paper *• Scissors
* You can substitute construction paper with a variety of other materials (e.g. regular paper, cardstock, aluminum foil, plastic, etc.)
Procedure
1. Using the tracer, trace out 30 rhombus shapes on to construction paper.
2. Cut out 30 rhombus shapes carefully. It is important to have all shapes the same size.
3. Immediately after cutting, place a dot on the backside of the shape.
4. Assemble all 30 pieces together by “hooking” pieces together in groups of 3 or 5.

Adaptations & Extensions
For younger grades:• Create a collaborative class
polyhedron• Students individually design
their rhombus shape• Teacher assembles it together
Extend the activity:• Create recycled art, lamps,
ornaments, etc.
