Day 1Monday 4 June 2012
9.00 16.15

Session I 09.00 - 12.15
Energy challenges: a global perspective
A plethora of international events have profoundly impacted energy and climate policies worldwide: the Fukushima nuclear tragedy, the “Arab Spring” Middle East / North African uprisings, the euro crisis, the fi nancial and economic crisis, the uncertainty that surrounded Durban climate negotiations, and the breakthrough in shale gas, to name but a few. This “new era” for European energy has forced governments to refocus efforts on reducing import dependency and bolstering supply through stimulating competitive and integrated markets. In this context, the ability of our sector to attract and effi ciently invest capital becomes a key driver for success and industry strategies are being refi ned to make sustainable innovation an integral part of the business.
Session II 13.30 - 16.15
Mismatched European policies: energy / climate reality check
The energy challenges confronting Europe and the world today require urgent and ambitious decisions by politicians and industry alike. While Europe does have a comprehensive energy and climate agenda it will take decades to put our energy system onto a sustainable and secure path if public awareness is not suffi ciently raised, energy / climate policies remain uncoordinated, and fi nance is not forthcoming. Europe urgently needs to wake up to these facts and conduct an internal “reality check”. Without a change of mind set, the EU risks failure on its decarbonisation agenda and market integration ambitions.
Session III 09.00 - 12.00
CEO Forum: fi nancing investments, refi ning strategies
Massive investments, both in generation and in grid infrastructure, are clearly required in the coming years if the EU is to meet its low-carbon energy agenda. In the context of the current economic, fi nancial and sovereign debt crisis in Europe, capital markets are, however, reluctant to provide the levels of fi nancing needed for long-term investments. How do our CEOs view the future? What strategies do they have? What will be the end game? And who’s ultimately accountable – industry or politics?
Session IV 13.45 - 16.00
EU Islands: test beds for mainland integration?
The large majority of Europe’s islands are isolated systems. They thus face particular challenges in terms of secure and sustainable energy supply. The development of innovative and alternative technologies, including affordable renewables, electricity storage and smart grids, is key to a successful - and sustainable - energy strategy for islands, whilst reducing, in the long-run, the dependency on diesel oil for conventional generation. Islands also play a signifi cant role as “test beds” for deployment of new technologies, for example, or for the integration of variable RES into the system.

Since 2010, EURELECTRIC has organised a formal student competition as an integral part of its Annual Convention. Students from all across Europe are invited to submit a one-page essay on a specifi c, predefi ned theme. The winning entry is judged by an independent industry expert. The student is also given the opportunity to present his/her essay to the audience of high-level delegates and is formally handed the Student Award.
This year’s student competition theme is as follows:“Can innovation in the electricity industry jumpstart a clean energy economy? What concrete actions are necessary to drive this change?”
Previous Student Award winners / themes:
• EURELECTRIC Convention – Stockholm 2011 Emi Bertoli, University of Trieste, Italy “Would investment in the electricity sector best fl ourish in a
European or national regulatory framework?”
• EURELECTRIC Convention – Dublin 2010 Patrick McCartan, Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland “If you were given a minute to address international leaders
during the UN climate negotiations, what single message would you convey – and why - on the electricity industry’s role in meeting the climate challenge?”

Liberalisation vs re-regulation: The future market direction?
Will the future energy sector be based on market principles or are we returning to regulated investments?
Decarbonisation and market harmonisation objectives create a policy dilemma between re-regulation and liberalisation. We are proposing a multi-client study to explore this issue.
We invite EURELECTRIC convention participants to join our new Future Market Direction multi-client study
