Plants!

Chloroplast: organelle

Chlorophyll: green pigment

Pigment: substance that reflects some light and absorbs the rest

Photosynthesis Process where plants take in light,

water, and carbon dioxide (CO2) and make food

Importance of PS: That’s how every-thing gets energy!

Photosynthesis equation CO2 + H20 + light sugar + oxygen Only happens in green parts Food made is stored in roots and

leaves

Two parts to PS

1. Light dependent reaction:

-- Light energy makes water split (the Hydrogen is used to make food)

– The oxygen is released as waste

Stoma/ stomata: opening on underside of leaves; allows for gas exchange

Oxygen and water lost thru them Open during day, closed at night

2. Light Independent reaction: doesn’t use light

–Glucose is made (sugar)
