Personal Background

• Father was an amateur artist

• Uncle was a professional artist

• They taught him with the retired art teacher, Baet van Ueberfeldt

• Father wanted him to be a teacher

• Became an artist instead

Key Historical Events

• World War I began in 1914

• Had to move back to Amsterdam and stay there for the next 4 years

• All his work was in Paris but he couldn’t go back there

• Influenced by De Stijl magazine

• Mondrian's Neo-Plasticism is similar to artwork in this magazine

• Cubism inspired Mondrian to create more abstract art

• He did more art with shapes and straight lines after that

What I’ve Learned

• Mondrian’s paintings are very simple

• However they take time to plan out and create

• Mondrian used tape

• Takes time to make perfect

Most Challenging/Interesting Part

• I had to figure out the right design

• I had to know what I was going to paint what

• I taped places where the black would go but the lines still weren’t perfect

• I had to try not to get paint on the edge of the canvas
