What is theDifference?

• Draw a Tree Map With Three Branches. Label the map Phrases and Clauses.

Phrases

• A phrase is a group of words and not containing both a subject and a verb. It is a part of a sentence, and does not express a complete thought.

Examples:• Inside the hot car at school.

• Throwing the eggs.

• The man in the picture.

CLAUSES• Definition: A clause is a

collection of words that has a subject and a verb – may or may not express a complete thought!!!

Independent Clause

• Is also known as a main clause.

Independent Clause

• Think poker player A clause that has a subject and a

verb & can stand by itself. In other words, it is a complete sentence.

Examples: You Bet

• Chris drank the slimy,raw eggs.

Sydney’s phone rang twice in class.

Dependent Clauses

• Also known as a subordinate clause. Subordinate means –

Less in rank or importance(Think player below a coach)

Dependent clauses

• Think baby since they are dependent on their parents.

• A dependent clause has a subject and a verb but do not form a complete thought or a complete sentence.

Dependent Examples

• Since Giovanni won the Geography Bee.

• If the Cardinals win the Super Bowl

• When the water pipe in Isla’s house ruptured

• After Matt burped in Mr. H.’s face.

More Key Information

• Words such as because, since, if, until, when, as, after, and before can signal a dependent (subordinate) clause is about to follow them. They are known as subordinating conjunctions.
