Photo Shoot

Front cover photos

StudioFor my cover photographs I used a small studio. It gave the photographs a much more professional look. It had lighting and I used an SLR camera to take the photographs.

Initial Ideas

From my research of the codes and conventions I found that three main colours were used on the cover. Two of them were black and white and the third one corresponded with the main photograph on the cover. I also found that from my online survey that the most popular colour is red. Because of this I will take photos and include something red in them.

I first of all decided to take photos using a red tartan scarf and a black and white jacket.

I didn’t like these photos because they were too over exposed and the scarf wasn’t the bright red colour I wanted. Also the shirt wasn’t the right colour and when the jacket was zipped up it didn’t give off the casual vibe I wanted.

I next decided to use a red t-shirt and remove the jacket.I like how Reece is in the centre of the photograph but I think this shot gives off an impersonal vibe, I changed this by taking the photograph waist up instead. I also changed the apature so the photograph didn’t look as over exposed as the last ones.

I think this mid shot works a lot better.

This type of photograph works a lot better however from my questionnaire I identified that my target audience wanted a fun silly photograph.

I looked back at the codes and conventions of the music magazine covers I studied and found that red lipstick was used. This gave me an idea, I got a pair of big comical red lips and got Reece to pose with them.

I really liked these photos because they were really fun and silly and it makes the reader feel like they get to know the musicians personality a bit more. That they are sharing a joke. The red t-shirt and lips correspond with my colour scheme and was the most popular colour from my questionnaire.
