Phase II Investigation Report
Keller Lake Convenience Store
Prepared for City of Maplewood
1.0 Introduction
Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc. (SEH®) was retained by the City of Maplewood to conduct a Phase II Environmental Investigation Report (Phase II). The investigated site is located at, 2228 Highway 61, Maplewood, Ramsey County, Minnesota. (herein referred to as “site” or “subject property”). The site location is depicted on Figure 1 “Site Location”.
1.1 Scope of Work This Phase II consisted of the following general tasks:
• Boring and soil sampling and analysis. Analytes varied by location and included Diesel Range Organics (DRO), Gasoline Range Organics (GRO), Petroleum Volatile Organics (VOCs), RCRA Metals, and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs).
• Groundwater sampling and analysis. Analytes included DRO, GRO, PVOCs, RCRA Metals, and PCBs.
• Final Phase II report summarizing the site sampling and laboratory analytical results.
1.2 Purpose of Investigation The City of Maplewood is evaluating the option of purchasing the property. The purpose of this Phase II is to investigate the site for the presence, magnitude and extent of contaminated soil and/or groundwater. The City of Maplewood will use the findings of this investigation for managing environmental conditions that may be encountered construction of a potential stormwater retention pond. Three gasoline and one diesel underground storage tanks (USTs) are located to the east of the building.
2.0 Site Background 2.1.1 Site Location
The subject property is located at 2228 Highway 61 in Maplewood, Minnesota. The subject property is located in the northeast quadrant of the intersection of Highway 61 and County Road B (Figures 1 and 2).
2.2 Site Description The site is a convenience store and gas station located east of Highway 61 (Figure 2). The site is bordered by a turf grass area to the north, residential property to west, County Road B to the south, and the Highway 61 Frontage Road to the West. Structures on site include a convenience store building and two fueling pump islands to the west and south of the building.
Phase II Investigation Report MAPLE 113910 City of Maplewood Page 2
The site topography is generally flat with a slight drop in elevation along the western property boundary. Based on the USGS topographic map for the area, the site elevation is approximately 890 feet above mean sea level (msl).
2.2.1 Potential and Known Contaminant Source Areas A Phase I Environmental Assessment (ESA) was completed by SEH in June 2011 for the proposed Highway 36 and English Street reconstruction. The Phase I ESA identified the Keller Lake Convenience Store as a closed Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) site; however, the extent and degree of contaminated soils and groundwater was unknown.
A Phase II Investigation was completed at the site by Allphase Companies in 1999. The investigation confirmed DRO, GRO, and VOC concentrations in soil and groundwater above regulatory guidelines. The Investigation Report identified the south and west pump islands and the former diesel tank basin as sources of contamination.
2.3 Regional Physical Setting 2.3.1 Regional Geology
Based on the map Surficial Geology of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area, Minnesota (Meyer, 2007) the site is signified by outwash material, consisting of sand and gravelly sand. This material was derived from marginal, flowing meltwater from glaciers.
2.3.2 Regional Hydrogeology According to the Ramsey County Surfical Hydrogeology of Ramsey County (1992) Regional and local groundwater flow direction is to the west-southwest toward the Mississippi River and encountered at approximately 875 feet amsl. This is confirmed by borings completed on site that encountered the water table at approximately 13 to 19 feet below ground surface (bgs).
2.3.3 Soils Based on the Geologic Atlas of Ramsey County, Minnesota (Patterson, 1992) most top-soil and surficial sediments exist from prevailing excavation and construction of the area. However, the parent material that the top-soil is derived from is dominated by deposition from glacial ice and meltwater.
The Natural Resource Conservation Service Web Soil Survey identifies the soils at the site as Chetek sandy loam, 6 to 12 percent slopes. The soil is outwash parent material and is somewhat excessively drained. The upper 20 inches are sandy loam, underlain by eight to 14 inches of loam, underlain by 14 to 19 inches of gravelly sandy loam, underlain by 19 to 60 inches of gravelly coarse sand.
3.0 Overview of Phase II Investigation 3.1 Scope and Rationale
The goal of this Phase II is to determine the extent of environmental impacts to soil and groundwater on the site. The scope of the subsurface investigation included nine Geoprobe® soil borings (Figure 2). The investigation included field screening soil for organic compounds and collecting soil samples and groundwater samples for laboratory analysis. The results of soil screening and laboratory analysis are used to evaluate impacts to the site.
3.2 Field Investigation and Sampling Methods The following sections describe the methods, procedures, and protocol used to conduct soil borings, soil sampling and groundwater sampling. Whenever possible and practical, the
Phase II Investigation Report MAPLE 113910 City of Maplewood Page 3
procedures were performed in accordance with Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) guidelines.
3.2.1 Soil Borings Geoprobe® borings (boreholes) were advanced on the site with a truck mounted unit in general accordance with the EPA Standard Operating Procedure No. 2050, Model 5400 GeoprobeTM Operation. A copy of this standard operating procedure (SOP) is attached as Appendix A “EPA SOP No. 2050, Model 5400 Geoprobe™ Operation”. No lubricants or solvents were used for downhole drilling or sampling equipment.
Borings were advanced to approximately 20 bgs. Each borehole was properly abandoned and all borehole cuttings were thin spread and left on-site. The location of each borehole is depicted on Figure 2.
3.2.2 Site Soil Sampling Soil samples were collected using a steel rod and sampler advanced into the ground using the hydraulic and/or hammer devices. Samplers were four feet long and two inch diameter hollow, stainless steel cylinders (Macro-Core®). The soil samples were collected in a hollow acetate liner placed into the sampler and extruded once the sample was withdrawn from the subsurface. Soil samples were collected continuously at four feet intervals to the termination depth of the boring. A portion of each sample was reserved for description in the field in general conformance with ASTM D 2488. Boring logs were prepared for each soil boring and are included in this report as Appendix B “Boring Logs”.
The acetate liner of each sample was cut open and the respective soil samples were placed into the appropriate jars for laboratory analysis. The SEH scientist wore a new clean pair of disposable Nitrile® gloves while collecting each sample. All remaining soil from each sample and borehole cuttings were left on-site. Sample containers were placed in coolers with ice and were protected from sunlight. Samples were transported to Pace Analytical Services, Inc. within 48 hours of their collection with proper chain-of-custody documentation.
Specific information on samples collected at each site (e.g. total number of samples collected, samples depths, etc.) is included within Section 4.0 “Phase II Investigation Results”.
Samples were collected for field screening from each boring. Soil samples collected were placed in a new, clean, quart-size, labeled, resealable bag. The bags used for field screening were used for one sample only. Soil clumps were manually agitated and the bags were shaken vigorously at the beginning and end of the headspace development period. The bags were allowed to volatilize in a sunny location. A MiniRae Photo-ionization detector with a 10.6 eV hNu bulb calibrated to Isobutylene was inserted through a small opening in the bag and the highest reading was recorded.
The results of the field screening are documented on the SEH scientists’ boring log prepared for the report and are included as Table 1 “PID Results”. Weather conditions at the time of the site investigation were hot and humid, this may also elevate the PID readings slightly.
Samples collected were labeled corresponding to the boring number from which they were collected (for example GP-1). Additionally, soil samples were labeled for the depth from which they were collected. For example, a sample collected from a two foot depth in GP-1 is labeled GP-1-2. Samples were collected from the interval ± 0.5 foot on either side of the noted sample depth.
Phase II Investigation Report MAPLE 113910 City of Maplewood Page 4
3.2.3 Groundwater Sampling Groundwater samples were collected through a PVC screen with polyethylene tubing and a peristaltic pump. The SEH scientist wore a new clean pair of disposable Nitrile® gloves while collecting each groundwater sample. The groundwater samples were placed in the appropriate laboratory containers in accordance with the laboratory’s specifications. The sample containers were placed in a cooler with ice and protected from sunlight. The samples were then transported to Pace Analytical Services, Inc. within 48 hours of their collection with proper chain-of-custody documentation.
Specific information on samples collected at each location (e.g. total number of samples collected, samples depths, etc.) is included within Section 4.0 “Phase II Investigation Results”.
3.3 Chemical Analytical Methodologies The soil and groundwater samples were analyzed by Pace Analytical Services, Inc.. The laboratory analytical methods and quality control data are included within the Pace Analytical Services, Inc. laboratory reports attached as Appendix C. Analytes were chosen based on likely impacts.
Soil and groundwater sample analytes included:
− Diesel Range Organics (Wisconsin Method DRO) − Gasoline Range Organics (Wisconsin Method GRO) − Petroleum Volatile Organic Compounds (Wisconsin Method GRO) − RCRA Metals (EPA Method 7471A/6010B) − Polychlorinated Biphenyls (EPA Method 8082)
3.4 Quality Assurance/Quality Control SEH reviewed the laboratory reports to verify required sample temperatures upon arrival and sample analysis within allowable holding times. The laboratory quality control data for each report was reviewed to verify that the following are within acceptable limits:
− Surrogates − Method blanks − Laboratory control samples − Holding time − Temperature − Matrix spike analysis
Qualifiers were applied to data where appropriate (see analytical result tables). Pace Analytical Services, Inc. is a Minnesota certified laboratory and has a current QA/QC manual on file with the Minnesota Department of Health and the MPCA. A QA/QC evaluation of laboratory data is provided in the Laboratory Report included in Appendix C.
3.5 Action Levels To evaluate the magnitude of impacts, analytical results are compared to Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) action levels. Soil results are compared to Tier 1 Soil Reference Values (SRV). Groundwater results are compared to Health Risk Limits (HRLs). No action levels exist for DRO and GRO. However,
Phase II Investigation Report MAPLE 113910 City of Maplewood Page 5
the MPCA and MDH use 200 mg/kg for soil and 200 µg/L for groundwater as a general guideline for DRO and GRO.
There are also no established HRLs for Arsenic, Lead and Mercury in groundwater. The Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL) established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and adopted by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) are established for public drinking water supplies. MCLs are used as action levels for evaluating Arsenic, Lead and Mercury at the site.
4.0 Phase II Investigation Results Geologic logging, field screening and laboratory analyses were conducted on the nine borings (GP-1 through GP-9) completed on the site. The following sections detail the results of the investigation. Detailed information including boring logs and laboratory reports may be found in Appendices B and C respectively. An overview of impacts to the site is included as Section 5.0 “Conclusions”.
4.1.1 Boring Locations and Rationale Boring locations were chosen based on site observations and current and historical use of the site. Boring locations on Figure 2.
• Boring GP-1, completed adjacent to the west fuel pump island. • Boring GP-2, completed adjacent to the south fuel pump island. • Boring GP-3, completed adjacent to underground fuel lines. • Boring GP-4, completed south of USTs. • Boring GP-5, completed on northeast portion of the site. • Boring GP-6, completed near the former diesel fuel UST basin. • Boring GP-7, completed north of the building structure. • Boring GP-8, completed, north east of the west fuel pump island. • Boring GP-9, completed northeast of the west fuel pump island.
4.1.2 Results of Geologic and Hydrogeologic Site Investigation The shallow geology of the site consists of fill in the upper nine to 16 feet underlain by till and outwash. Wet soils were encountered in borings at approximately 13 to 19 feet bgs. Water levels recorded in borings GP-1, GP-2, and GP-6 are approximately 15.6, 15.9, and 15.7 feet bgs, respectively.
4.1.3 Results of Soil Quality Investigation Soils with petroleum odors and/or black and gray staining were observed in borings GP-1 though GP-3 and GP-6 through GP-9, no other indications of contamination were observed in soil from borings (see Table 1 for PID field screening results). Select samples were analyzed for DRO, GRO, PVOCs, PCBs, and RCRA metals (Table 2).
4.1.3.1 DRO Five samples have DRO concentrations above laboratory detection limits. GP-1-12, GP-2-15, GP-6-3, GP-8-19, and GP-9-18 have DRO concentrations of 1070, 234, 53.9, 3580, and 66.1 mg/kg respectively. The DRO concentrations in samples GP-1-12, GP-2-15, and GP-8-19 exceed the MPCA and MDH generally accepted guideline of 200 mg/kg (Table 2).
Phase II Investigation Report MAPLE 113910 City of Maplewood Page 6
4.1.3.2 GRO Six samples have GRO concentrations above laboratory detection limits. GP-1-12, GP-2-7, GP-2-15, GP-6-3, GP-8-19, and GP-9-18 have GRO concentrations of 2290, 6.4, 467, 12.5, 5250, and 199 mg/kg respectively. The GRO concentrations in samples GP-1-12, GP-2-15, and GP-8-19 exceed the MPCA and MDH generally accepted guideline of 200 mg/kg. The GRO concentration of 199 mg/kg in sample GP-9-18 is just below the accepted guideline (Table 2).
4.1.3.3 RCRA Metals Six samples have arsenic concentrations above MPCA Tier I SRVs of 9 mg/kg. GP-1-12, GP-3-5, GP-4-10, GP-5-9, GP-6-3, and GP-8-19 have arsenic concentrations of 25.1, 20.1, 9.4, 16.8, 10.9, and 16.2 mg/kg. All other results are below Tier 1 SRVs for RCRA metals (Table 2).
4.1.3.4 PVOCs GP-1-12, GP-2-15, GP-8-19, and GP-9-18 have PVOC concentrations above MPCA Tier 1 SRVs, all other PVOC concentrations are below the MPCA Tier 1 SRVs or non-detect (Table 2). PVOC concentrations above MPCA Tier 1 SRVs in sample GP-1-12 are;
− Xylene (259 mg/kg) − 1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene (178 mg/kg) − 1,3,5-Trimethylbenzene (68.0 mg/kg)
PVOC concentrations above MPCA Tier 1 SRVs in sample GP-2-15 are;
− 1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene (25.2 mg/kg) − 1,3,5-Trimethylbenzene (10.2 mg/kg)
PVOC concentrations above MPCA Tier 1 SRVs in sample GP-8-19 are;
− Benzene (18.8 mg/kg) − Xylene (353 mg/kg) − 1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene (168 mg/kg) − 1,3,5-Trimethylbenzene (73.2 mg/kg)
PVOC concentrations above MPCA Tier 1 SRVs in sample GP-9-18 are;
− 1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene (10.8 mg/kg) − 1,3,5-Trimethylbenzene (4.4 mg/kg)
4.1.4 Results of Groundwater Quality Investigation Petroleum odors were observed in groundwater at the time of sample collection at GP-1 and GP-2. Strong petroleum odors and a slight sheen were observed in groundwater at GP-8 and GP-9, however groundwater samples were not collected at these locations. Water samples were collected from borings GP-1, GP-2, and GP-6. All samples were analyzed for DRO, GRO, PVOCs, and RCRA Metals (Table 3).
4.1.4.1 DRO All three groundwater samples have DRO concentrations above laboratory detection limits. GP-1W, GP-2W, and GP-6W have DRO concentrations of 15,100, 15,600, and 6,950 mg/kg respectively. The DRO concentrations in all three samples exceed the MDH generally accepted guideline of 200 mg/kg (Table 3).
Phase II Investigation Report MAPLE 113910 City of Maplewood Page 7
4.1.4.2 GRO Three samples have GRO concentrations above laboratory detection limits. GP-1W, GP-2W, and GP-6W have GRO concentrations of 31,400, 29,400, and 2,110 mg/kg respectively. The GRO concentrations in samples GP-1W, GP-2W, and GP-6W exceed the MDH generally accepted guideline of 200 mg/kg (Table 3).
4.1.4.3 RCRA Metals Concentrations of Mercury, Cadmium, Chromium, Selenium, and Silver are all below laboratory detection limits. Arsenic detections range from 17.5 to 23.4 µg/L. There is no MDH HRL established for Arsenic. The EPA MCL for Arsenic in drinking water is 10 µg/L. The analytical reporting limit for Arsenic from the analyzed samples is 10 µg/L. Therefore all detections of Arsenic exceed the MCL. Barium detections range from 261 to 802 µg/L, which is below the HRL of 2,000 µg/L. There is no MDH HRL established for Lead. Lead detections range from 7.1 to 11.9 µg/L, which is below the EPA MCL for drinking water of 15µg/L (Table 3).
5.0 Conclusions Petroleum impacted soil and groundwater was observed south, west northwest, and northeast of the convenience store at boring locations GP-1, GP-2, GP-6, GP-8, and GP-9. Laboratory analyses indicate that soil is impacted above MPCA generally accepted guideline for DRO and GRO in samples GP-1-12, GP-2-15, and GP-8-19. Petroleum VOC concentrations exceed MPCA Tier 1 SRVs in samples GP-1-12, GP-2-15, GP-8-19, and GP-9-18. Soil concentrations of Arsenic in samples GP-1-12, GP-3-5, GP-4-10, GP-5-9, GP-6-3, and GP-8-19 exceed the MPCA Tier 1 SRV guidelines.
Laboratory analyses indicate that groundwater is impacted above MDH generally accepted guideline for DRO and GRO in samples all three groundwater samples. Petroleum VOC concentrations exceed MDH HRLs in samples all three groundwater samples. Groundwater samples exceed the EPA MCL for Arsenic of 10 µg/L. However, naturally occurring levels of Arsenic often exceed this level.
No other impacts to soil or groundwater exceeding established guidelines were identified.

GEOPROBE™ OPERATION
1.0 SCOPE AND APPLICATION
The purpose of this standard operating procedure(SOP) is to describe the collection of representativesoil, soil-gas, and groundwater samples using a Model5400 Geoprobe sampling device. Any deviationsTM
from these procedures should be documented in thesite/field logbook and stated in project deliverables.
Mention of trade names or commercial products doesnot constitute U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(U.S. EPA) endorsement or recommendation for use.
2.0 METHOD SUMMARY CONTAINERS, HANDLING AND
The Geoprobe sampling device is used to collectTM
soil, soil-gas and groundwater samples at specificdepths below ground surface (BGS). The GeoprobeTM
is hydraulically powered and is mounted in acustomized four-wheel drive vehicle. The base of thesampling device is positioned on the ground over thesampling location and the vehicle is hydraulicallyraised on the base. As the weight of the vehicle istransferred to the probe, the probe is pushed into theground. A built-in hammer mechanism allows theprobe to be driven through dense materials.Maximum depth penetration under favorablecircumstances is about 50 feet. Components of theModel 5400 Geoprobe are shown in Figures 1TM
through 6 (Appendix A).
Soil samples are collected with a specially-designedsample tube. The sample tube is pushed and/orvibrated to a specified depth (approximately one footabove the intended sample interval). The interior plugof the sample tube is removed by inserting small-diameter threaded rods. The sample tube is thendriven an additional foot to collect the samples. Theprobe sections and sample tube are then withdrawnand the sample is extruded from the tube into samplejars.
Soil gas can be collected in two ways. One method
involves withdrawing a sample directly from theprobe rods, after evacuating a sufficient volume of airfrom the probe rods. The other method involvescollecting a sample through tubing attached by anadaptor to the bottom probe section. Correctly used, the latter method provides more reliable results.
Slotted lengths of probe can be used to collectgroundwater samples if the probe rods can be drivento the water table. Groundwater samples are collectedusing either a peristaltic pump or a small bailer.
3.0 SAMPLE PRESERVATION,
STORAGE
Refer to specific ERT SOPs for proceduresappropriate to the matrix, parameters and samplingobjector.
Applicable ERT SOPs include:
ERT #2012, Soil Sampling
ERT #2007, Groundwater Well Sampling
ERT #2042, Soil Gas Sampling
4.0 INTERFERENCES ANDPOTENTIAL PROBLEMS
A preliminary site survey should identify areas to beavoided with the truck. All underground utilitiesshould be located and avoided during sampling.Begin sampling activities with an adequate fuelsupply.
Decontamination of sampling tubes, probe rods, adaptors, non-expendable points and other equipmentthat contacts the soil is necessary to prevent cross-contamination of samples. During sampling, thebottom portion and outside of the sampling tubes canbe contaminated with soil from other depth intervals.
2
Care must be taken to prevent soil which does not C Mill-Slotted Well Point (GW)represent the sampled interval form being C Threaded Drive Point (GW)incorporated into the sample. Excess soil should be C Well Mini-Bailer (GW)carefully wiped from the outside surface of the C Tubing Bottom Check Valve (GW)sampling tube and the bottom 3 inches of the sample C 3/8" O.D. Low Density Polyethylene Tubingshould be discarded before extruding the sample into (GW, SG)a sample jar. C Gas Sampling Adaptor and Cap (SG)
The amount of sample to be collected and the proper C Neoprene "O" - Rings (SG)sample container type (i.e., glass, plastic), chemical C Vacuum System (mounted in vehicle) (SG)preservation, and storage requirements are dependent C Piston Tip (S)upon the parameter(s) of interest. Guidelines for the C Piston Rod (S)containment, preservation, handling and storage of C Piston Stop (S)soil-gas samples are described in ERT SOP #2042, C Sample Tube (11.5" in length) (S)Soil-Gas Sampling. C Vinyl Ends Caps (S)
Obtaining sufficient volume of soil for multiple C Extruder Pistons (Wooden Dowels) (S)analyses from one sample location may present a C Wire Brushproblem. The Geoprobe soil sampling system C Brush AdaptersTM
recovers a limited volume of soil and it is not possible C Cleaning Brush (Bottle)to reenter the same hole and collect additional soil. When multiple analyses are to be performed on soilsamples collected with the Geoprobe , it is importantTM
that the relative importance of the analyses beidentified. Identifying the order of importance willensure that the limited sample volume will be used forthe most crucial analyses.
5.0 EQUIPMENT/APPARATUS
Sampling with the Geoprobe involves use of theTM
equipment listed below. Some of the equipment isused for all sample types, others are specific to soil(S), soil gas (SG), or groundwater (GW) as noted.

6.0 REAGENTS
Decontamination solutions are specified in ERTSOP #2006, Sampling Equipment Decontamination.
7.0 PROCEDURES
Portions of the following sections have beencondensed from the Model 5400 GeoprobeTM
Operations Manual(1). Refer to this manual for moredetailed information concerning equipmentspecifications, general maintenance, tools, throttlecontrol, clutch pump, GSK-58 Hammer, and trouble-shooting. A copy of this manual will be maintainedwith the Geoprobe and on file in the QualityTM
Assurance (QA) office.
7.1 Preparation
1. Determine extent of the sampling effort, sample matrices to be collected, and typesand amounts of equipment and suppliesrequired to complete the sampling effort.
2. Obtain and organize necessary sampling andmonitoring equipment.
3. Decontaminate or pre-clean equipment, andensure that it is in working order.

7.2 Setup of GeoprobeTM
1. Back carrier vehicle to probing location.
2. Shift the vehicle to park and shut off ignition.
3. Set parking brake and place chocks underrear tires.
4. Attach exhaust hoses so exhaust blowsdownwind of the sampling location (this isparticularly important during soil gassampling).
5. Start engine using the remote ignition at theGeoprobe operator position.TM
6. Activate hydraulic system by turning on theElectrical Control Switch located on theGeoprobe electrical control panel (FigureTM
1, Appendix A). When positioning theprobe, always use the SLOW speed. TheSLOW speed switch is located on thehydraulic control panel (Figure 2, AppendixA).
Important: Check for clearance onvehicle roof before folding Geoprobe outTM
of the carrier vehicle.
7. Laterally extend the Geoprobe from theTM
vehicle as far as possible by pulling theEXTEND control lever toward the back ofthe vehicle while the Geoprobe isTM
horizontal.
8. Using the FOOT control, lower the DerrickSlide so it is below cylinder (A) beforefolding the Geoprobe out of the carrierTM
vehicle (Figure 3, Appendix A). This willensure clearance at the roof of the vehicle.
9. Use the FOLD, FOOT, and EXTENDcontrols to place Geoprobe to the exactTM
11. Using the FOOT control, put the weight ofthe vehicle on the probe unit. Do not raisethe rear of the vehicle more than six inches.
Important: Keep rear vehicle wheels onthe ground surface when transferring theweight of the vehicle to the probe unit.Otherwise, vehicle may shift whenprobing begins.
12. When the probe axis is vertical and theweight of the vehicle is on the probe unit, probing is ready to begin.
7.3 Drilling Through SurfacePavement or Concrete
1. Position carrier vehicle to drilling location.
2. Fold unit out of carrier vehicle.
3. Deactivate hydraulics.
4. Insert carbide-tipped drill bit into hammer.

7.9 Soil-Gas Sampling With Post-RunTubing (PRT)
1. Follow procedures outlined in Sections 7.1through 7.6.
Retraction of rod disengages expendable
rod.

15. Inspect the "O"-ring at the base of the 10. Remove extension rods and attached stop-pinadapter to verify that proper sealing was from the probe rods.achieved during sampling. The "O"-ringshould be compressed. 11. Replace drive cap onto top probe rod.
Note: If the "O"-ring is not compressed, vapors from within the probe sections mayhave been collected rather than vaporsfrom the intended sample interval.
7.10 Soil Sampling
1. Follow procedures outlined in Sections 7.1through 7.6.
2. Assemble soil-sampling tube.
1. Thread piston rod into piston tip.
2. Insert piston tip into sample tube, seating piston tip into cutting edgeof sample tube.
3. Thread drive head into threaded endof sample tube.
4. Thread piston stop pin into drivehead. Stop pin should be tightenedwith wrench so that it exertspressure against the piston rod.
3. Attach assembled sampler onto leading proberod.
4. Drive the sampler with the attached proberods to the top of the interval to be sampled.
5. Move probe unit back from the top of theprobe rods to allow work room.
6. Remove drive cap and lower extension rodsinto inside diameter of probe rods usingcouplers to join rods together.
7. Attach extension rod handle to top extensionrod.
8. Rotate extension rod handle clockwise untilthe leading extension rod is threaded into thepiston stop in downhole.
9. Continue to rotate extension rod handleclockwise until reverse-threaded stop-pin hasdisengaged from the drive head.
12. Mark the top probe rod with a marker or tapeat the appropriate distance above the groundsurface (dependent on sample tube length).
13. Drive probe rods and sampler the designateddistance. Be careful not to overdrive thesampler which could compact the soil samplein the tube, making it difficult to extrude.
Important: Documentation of samplelocation should include both surface andsubsurface identifiers. Example: CorrectMethod - Sample Location S-6, 12.0' -13.0'. Incorrect Method - SampleLocation S-6, 12.0'.
14. Retract probe rods from the hole and recoverthe sample tube. Inspect the sample tube toconfirm that a sample was recovered.
15. Disassemble sampler. Remove all parts.
16. Position extruder rack on the foot of theGeoprobe derrick. TM
17. Insert sample tube into extruder rack with thecutting end up.
18. Insert hammer anvil into hammer.
19. Position the extruder piston (wood dowel)and push sample out of the tube using thePROBE control on the Geoprobe . CollectTM
the sample as it is extruded in an appropriatesample container.
Caution: use care when performing thistask. Apply downward pressuregradually. Use of excessive force couldresult in injury to operator or damage totools. Make sure proper diameterextruder piston is used.
20. To remove rods follow procedures outlinedin Section 7.7.
8
7.11 Groundwater Sampling
1. Follow Sections 7.1 thorough 7.6 with thefollowing exception: the Mill-Slotted WellRod with attached threaded drive pointshould be the first section probed into theground. Multiple sections of mill-slottedwell rods can be used to provide a greatervertical section into which groundwater canflow.
2. Probe to a depth at which groundwater is Sampling without Interior Tubingexpected.
3. Remove Drive Cap and insert an electric Number of Rods in the Groundwater-level indicator to determine if waterhas entered the slotted sections of probe rod. Volume in Liters/1000 = Reading onRefer to ERT SOP #2043, Water Level Vacuum Pump Instrument GaugeMeasurement, to determine water level.
4. If water is not detected in the probe rods, replace the drive cap and continue probing.Stop after each additional probe length anddetermine if groundwater has entered theslotted rods.
5. After the probe rods have been driven intothe saturated zone, sufficient time should beallowed for the water level in the probe rodsto stabilize.
Note: It will be difficult if not impossibleto collect a groundwater sample in aquifermaterial small enough to pass through theslots (<0.02 inch diameter).
6. Groundwater samples may be collected withthe 20-mL well Mini-Bailer or a pumpingdevice. If samples are being collected forvolatile organic analysis (VOA), the 20-mLWell Mini-Bailer should be used. If samplesare being collected for a variety of analyses,VOA samples should be collected first usingthe bailer. Remaining samples can becollected by pumping water to the surface.Withdrawing water with the pump is moreefficient than collecting water with the 20-mL well Mini-Bailer.
Important: Documentation of samplelocation should include both surface andsubsurface identifiers. Example: SampleLocation GW-6, 17'-21' bgs, water level in
probe rods is 17 feet bgs, and the leadingsection of probe rod is 21 feet bgs. Thewater sample is from this zone, not from17 feet bgs or 21 feet bgs.
7. Remove rods following procedures outlinedin Section 7.7.
