DavidSearcy,timpanistoftheLaScalaOperaorchestraformorethanthreedecades,diedon

August2,2011,afteralongillness. Davidwasasingularauthorityamongcol-leaguesallovertheworld,andformanyyoungtimpanistsandpercussionistsaninspiringteacherandfatherlyfriend.Hisplayingcareer,bothlyricandsymphonic,andhisinnatemusicalcuriositymadethescopeofhisknowledgeoftherepertoireprobablythebroadest,andhisinterpretationofthatrepertoirethedeepest,ofanytimpanistever.Hisnever-flagginginterestinmusichistoryfueledhisconvictionoftheworthoftraditioninanevermoreunsettledworld,andhelookedalwaystopassontheculturalheritageofhisinstrumentanditspracticetothosewhosoughthispres-ence. BorninRichmond,California,onJanuary21,1946,DavidfirststudiedinhishomecityofOakland,andinhisteenswasastudentofRolandKohloff.In1964hewenttoTanglewood,thenremainedontheEastCoasttostudywithVicFirth,andin1965gaveintoalong-heldwishtoplayinEuropewhenatimpaniopeningintheMusikselskabetHarmonieninBergen,Norway,madethemovepossible.Twoyearslaterhewaslookingfornewchallenges,otherconcepts,andanewartisticorientation.InViennahestudiedwithRichardHochrainer,andthenfoundhistruementorandguideinRobertHinzeinHamburg,Germany. In1968hebecamesolotimpanistoftheBavarianStateOperainMunich,wherehere-maineduntil1972whenClaudioAbbadoinvitedhimtojointheorchestraatLaScala.Later,whenAbbadofoundedtheEuropeanYouthOrchestraandtheGustavMahlerYouthOr-chestra,Davidwashisfirstchoiceforapercussiontutor. From1980untilhisdeath,DavidguidedthepercussionclassatMilan’sCivicMusicSchool.Here,heformedawholenewgenerationoftimpanistsforItalyandEurope,andafewmoredistantpartsoftheworldaswell.HewasalsovisitingProfessorattheRoyalAcad-emyofMusicinLondon. Davidbroughtawholesomefantasyintotheworldandnoone,notevenhispeers,everlefthiscompanywithouttakingawaysomebitofknowledgethatmademusic,orplaying,orevenlife,abitclearerandmoremeaningful.Forthatwe’llbeevergratefultohim.

theGMDrumSchoolinTorino,directedbyGigi Morello.Aldo Mazza(Repercussion,KoSAFounderandArtisticDirector)anddrumsetartistSergio Bellotti(BerkleeCollegeofMusic)wereinvitedtoleadandinstructatwo-dayintensiveworkshopcoveringthetopic“itisaboutthegroove.” Coveringabroadrangeoftopics,fromdrumsettohandandworldper-cussion,theclassesincludedbothperformingandinteractivesessions. Attheendofthefirstday,the50partici-pantsinTorinoweretreatedtoalivevideoconnectiontoNewYorkwhereKoSAartistalumnusanddigitalmediaexpertAllan Mol-narfacilitatedaliveinteractivevideodiscussionwithKoSAalumnifacultyartistsMike Main-ieri,Marcus Santos,Michael WimberleyandJim Royle. Thetwo-dayintensiveworkshopculminatedinapublicjamsessionatalocalclubinthefamousPiazzaImmanuele.BellottiandMazzawerejoinedbylocalmusiciansinaneveningofjammingandhangingwithmanystudentsandlocalmusicians. Wes Crawfordperformedtwiceondrum-setwithBetweenWorldsattheGnaoua

TheStankovic Percussion Ensemblehasbeenveryactivethisyear,playingover60

concertsinSerbiaandMontenegro.InFebru-aryJeff Queenpresentedaclinicandtwocon-certswiththeSPE DrumlineinBelgradeandNoviSad.InJulythegrouphadguestsfromSouthernMissouriUniversityandIllinoisStateUniversityforafive-dayworkshop,clinic,andtwoperformanceswiththeensemble.Clini-cianswereMatt Brusca,Josh Zimmer,Gregg Walker,Arthur Johnson,andKevin Ranney.TheclinicwassupportedbytheU.S.EmbassyinBelgrade.TwoSerbiangraduatestudentswillcontinuetheirstudiesintheU.S.Milos BranisavljevicreceivedafullscholarshiptotheBerkleeCollegeofMusic,andIgor StojanovicreceivedafullscholarshiptoBenedictCollege.

ten-dayrunfromJune1–10.TheeventwasgenerouslyhostedbyFurmanUniversityinGreenvilleandallowedparticipantsfromaroundtheU.S.toparticipateintheperfor-manceandstudyofsomeofthemostpromi-nentpiecesfromthepercussionrepertoire.UtilizingaselectionofgenerouslyborrowedinstrumentsfromYamahaandPearl/Adams,nief-norf’sofferingincludedsixconcertsintendays,allfreeandopentothegeneralpublic. Thefestivalbeganwithaneveningconcertbythefacultygroupthenief-norf Project,whoperformedChristopherAdler’scompel-lingwork“PinesLongSleptinSunshine,”aswellasworksbyMarkApplebaumandSteveReich.Dayslater,theparticipantsheadeddowntowntoFallsParkandpresentedTerryRiley’s“InC”andJohnZorn’s“Cobra”toavibrantandenthusiasticaudienceofallages.Thefestivalalsoincludedafirst-rateeveningperformancebyemergingsoloartistRyan Nestor,whichincludedarenditionofRogerReynolds’“Watershed,”andamoreinformalCabaretConcertmade-upofsoloperformancesbytheparticipants,whichwashighlightedbyCalebHerron’sclosingperformanceofVinkoGlobokar’s“Corporel.”Additionally,composersCarolineMalloneeandStevenSnowdenvisitedcampus,presentedmasterclassesandcoachings,andthenheardtheirpiecespresentedinconcertnexttoworksbyAlexandreLunsqui,StuartSaundersSmith,andthevintagesoundsofMa-rioDavidovsky’s“SynchronismsNo.5.” Aftermorethanaweekofdiscussion,rehearing,andhang-time,theparticipantspresentedafinalconcertonJune9aspartofFurman’sMusicbytheLakeconcertseries,at-tendedbyover500people.TheperformersgaveaperformanceofJohnLutherAdams’“Qily-aun,”whichwassurroundedbyDavidCrowell’s“TheDayAfter...,”ChristopherAdler’s“SignalsIntelligence,”andmasterworksbySteveReichandIannisXenakis.
