ProclaimingtheGoodNewsIn January, Bishop Darlington Bendankeha of Kagera in Tanzania,invited the CE East Africa team to train 150 clergy to use theChristianity Explored course. The CE team also returned to theAnglicanPeaceCentreinCyanguguontheRwandanborderwiththeDRC, to equip 50 clergy from Rwanda, Burundi and the Congo. InSeptember,BishopTimWambunyaofButereinKenya,askedtheteamtotrain50laypastorstousetheCEcoursewithintheircommunities.
TeachingandNurturingNewBelieversInMay,BishopNathanAmootiofCyangugu,Rwanda,invitedStephento teach a module on Judaism and Christianity at the DiocesanTheologicalSchool.TheSchoolistraininglay-leaderswholiveinrurallocations,manyofwhomhavelittleornoformaleducation.
RespondingtoHumanNeedTheSouthamptonandWinchesterVisitorsGroup (SWVG) are volunteers whobefriend and support adult asylumseekersandrefugeesintheSouthamptonarea. Stephen is presently undergoingtrainingtobecomeavisitor.SWVGseektoimprove the lives of asylum seekers andsupportthosethataredestitute.
TransformingUnjustStructuresSabeelJerusalem,haslaunchedaninteractiveresource called Kumi Now profilingorganisations working to raise awarenessabout specific issues in Israel-Palestine,provideinformationaboutanissueofinjusticethrough the stories of those effected, andpromote a creative nonviolent advocacyaction.Stephenhascontributed twochapterstothisresource.
SafeguardingtheIntegrityofCreationThe Keep Hope Alive Olive PlantingCampaign is coordinated by theJointAdvocacyInitiativeoftheEastJerusalemYMCA\YWCA andAlternative TourismGroup(ATG).Thisyear12,000olivetreesaplings were funded by internationaldonors. In February, Stephen helpedplant 800 olive trees on four farmsthreatened by Israeli settlementexpansion and land confiscation. Thesetrees will provide vulnerable familieswithasustainableincome. ForthcomingPeacemakingInitiativesThese include invitations to lecture at theological seminaries andchurches in the USA, Iran and South Sudan; teaching a module at
Kagera DiocesanTheological School inRwanda; giving a seminaron peacemaking at the BetLahem Live Festival inBethlehem; and helping topromote the Christiancommunity in Palestine atSpringHarvest.
