Dear Friends,As our country celebrates our
240th birthday, I would like toshare the story of Suzanne CarterMeldman.
Suzanne is a pioneer, a womanahead of her time. She was theonly child of Jack and ShirleyCarter. Her father was an attorneyand her mother was simplybrilliant in the stock market.Suzanne was born in Chicago, growing up in Milwaukee,Wisconsin. Her grandmotherowned a large dry goods store, and they lived above the storewith her dog Skippy. Her birthdayis August 18th and her favoritechildhood birthday memory is asimple celebration eating applesin the park on a hot summer day.
Suzanne was a Quiz Kid andenjoyed politics, even working fora local congressman. She wasoften featured in the Milwaukeepapers at the young age of 14.Suzanne was invited to the WhiteHouse to confer with FranklinDelano Roosevelt regarding thewar, but could not meet with thePresident due to the precariousclimate of the nation.
Suzanne skipped two grades inelementary school, graduatingfrom Shorewood High School in1944, starting college at age 16and graduating from RadcliffeCollege in 1948. Upon
graduation, she worked for theDean of Harvard Law and for theUnited Nations in New York. Aspart of a delegation to Paris, sheagain rubbed elbows with noneother than Eleanor Roosevelt. These were exciting times for ayoung woman.
Suzanne married, moved toOhio and then settled in HighlandPark in 1956 where she lived for60 years, founding HillelFoundation while in college withmentors Ida and Judah Shapiro.Suzanne was always active in theJewish community, attendingCongregation Solel and takingYiddish classes.
As you can tell, Suzanne lovesto learn! She studied Chinese for afew years, attained a mastersdegree in urban planning in her60s, was a member of the ArtInstitute and Chicago Symphonyfor over 50 years, and wrote the“Chicago Horticultural Society at90” which described the history ofthe Botanic Garden. Whew! Besides being a gourmetcook, (known for her homemadeground gefilte fish), an avidgardener, (she won awards for herroses), she also had 4 children -daughters Karen, Diana andBarbara, and son Lawrence. Iknow you are wondering how shefound the time. Well, her childrenwere her first priority! She is soproud of her family and alwayssupports their interests. She isblessed with 7 grandchildren;Oren, Ariella, Elan, Jacob, Jay, Jeffand Leah. She is the proudgreat-grandmother of Shira, Taliyaand Yair.
Suzanne is an inspiration; sheloves to learn and exhibits a zestfor life. Her retirement includedediting the biography of AdlaiStevenson, written by JohnBartlow Martin. When I reviewedall these wonderful personal and
professional accomplishments, she modestly says, “It is importantto keep busy.” What amazes meabout Suzanne, as a grandmotherand in retirement, is that shecontinued to seek outopportunities to entertain, cook, write, and appreciate music andgarden. She is a true renaissancewoman! - Maureen
