Going all out for St. Patrick’s Day!
Health
Notes From Music andYoga With Linda
Participants were attentive andalert throughout our practice, keeping a steady pace, from ourwarm up, observing, and slowingdown the breath, to movingfingers one at a time—to which aresident exclaimed, “You curl yourfingers in so beautifully!”
Another resident took a guessas to the benefit of the “forwardbending pose,” saying, “It clearsthe mind, stops negativethoughts”—which it does help do,as it brings fresh oxygen intothe brain.
On the 13th, we closed withInstrumental Irish Music, inhonor of St. Patrick’s Day, with
the group playing percussioninstruments, which they appearedto really enjoy.
And on the 27th I introduced anew activity, with classical musicby Beethoven. Moving smallscarves to the melody proved tobe a fun challenge; everyone tookturns catching, and tossing thescarves into the air, eventuallypassing them to each other, andbeing creative with theirmovements as they swayed to therhythm of the melody. One of theladies commented, “They’re a loteasier on your fingers than a ball.”Indeed, and more fun!
See you on Sunday,Linda

OccupationalTherapy Month
Occupational Therapy is therapybased on performing the
meaningful activities of dailyliving, (self-care skills, education, work and social skills), especially
to enable or enhance participationin such activities despite
impairments or limitations inphysical or mental functioning.Occupational therapists are
skilled professionals. Theireducation includes the study ofhuman growth and development, with specific emphasis on thesocial, emotional and physicaleffects of illness and injury. Theyare unique, in that they look atthe whole picture when it comesto a person’s treatment.
They look at the person’sabilities, task to be performed, and the environment in which thetask is to take place.
The older adult benefits fromoccupational therapy becausetheir goal is to assist withregaining or maintaining a level in
independence that will allowthem to age in place for as long aspossible. Occupational therapyhas been proven effective forseniors living with variousmedical conditions or recoveringfrom surgery. In addition toworking with individuals toincrease strength or regainimportant life supporting skills, occupational therapists workthroughout the community, counseling families, localgovernments, and communitygroups to ensure that each isdoing what it can to help olderadults maintain theirindependence.
Belmont Village offers bothoccupational therapy and physicaltherapy services. Our WellnessCenter nurses work closely withour therapists to identify thoseresidents who would benefit fromthese therapies and contacts thefamilies and physicians tocoordinate care.
We encourage, educate andpromote healthy living.
