Messages from the Principal’s Desk
A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
Diversity of children should be seen as an asset. Romans 12 6-8
Differences come from two sources “Nature””-what you are given in terms of capacity of your
gifts and “Nurture”-whether you use the gifts you are given and who supports you with them,
this either suppresses or enhances the “Nature”. As teachers we need to trigger the
opportunity so that every child understands the importance of hope, optimism and that
essentially the foundation of creativity is learning
In partnership, parents, care givers and teachers need to help children become more aware of
their strengths and weaknesses then you can either outsource your weakness or practise to
improve upon your weakness. Similarly with your strengths you can use your strength to help
others and continue to develop in that area. For when you know yourself and know your own
strengths and weaknesses then you can discover how to problem solve elements of living a
successful life and surely this is ultimately what we want for our children?
One reason why schools and society require a certain amount of conformity is to allow the
immature mind to begin to understand about difference and how important it is to use the
power of the group or community to give you the security and the safety to be different and
take risks while remaining safe.
There is over whelming research and evidence to show that allowing the immature mind too
much choice in decision making actually confuses them and makes decision making stressful
and can lead to the development of anxiety, before they really need to have to take on that
burden. The decision making burden is still meant to be on the shoulders of the parent and
the school.
The natural progression into a rebellious teenager is all about this desire to start to take
control and to make decisions. If we allow access to all the loosening of the rules that a
teenager expects and you give them now in the primary years: then you will have some difficult
teenager years. If young children are allowed make-up, extreme hair styles and body piercings
at a young age then they need to go even more extreme in the more rebellious years.
Therefore, we ask your support in maintaining a commitment to the School Uniform Policy. The
revised policy is attached for your information.
Kind regards
Sally O’Dea

Change of dates
Please replace the previous calendar with the one sent out last Friday. The major amendment to the termly
Calendar sent out on Friday is the change to the end of term events. We have received many requests to
change the date of the Christmas Concert. I am sure you understand that it is extremely difficult for us to fit
in with everyone else’s plans. However, as it is a short term this year we have changed the traditional Friday
evening Christmas concert to the Tuesday evening 5th Dec. However, the knock on effect of this is we have
changed the format of the Graduation events so that staff and parents are not out for two nights in that week.
The Graduation Mass will take place first thing Monday morning (4 Dec) followed by the Graduating children
of Year 6 going out to lunch. There will not be an evening Graduation ceremony.
Uniforms for Sizing/Ordering
Please note that we now have samples of the new shorts and skorts available at the office for you to try on
your child and order for either this term or next year. The plan will be to have an ordering period each term.
You will be required to purchase the grey shorts and skorts from the school at cost. The boys/girls shorts are
$13.00 and the girl’s skort is $15.50. Whilst I know you can get a pair of grey shorts for as low as $4 dollars
from Best & Less, these shorts are well made from quality material and will stand up to the rigors of everyday
wear, plus they have a zippered pocket, are Sunsmart approved and wash very well. Please support the school
in our endeavours to have a more consistent school uniform in place.
The new grey socks are also now available (by order) from the school office. We have a pair available for you
to view. They are excellent quality and are $2.40 a pair.
40 km Speed Zone
I remind all parent and visitors to the school that there is a speed restriction of 40kmph on the streets around
the school before and after school. This is in place for the safety of the many children who walk to school or
who are being dropped off in front of the school. Please keep to the 40kmph speed limit.
Confirmation
Last Sunday, three of our Year Five/Six students received the Sacrament of Confirmation in Our Lady of
Mount Carmel Church, along with some of their classmates who received a special blessing. The Principal
Celebrant of the Mass was our new Bishop Michael Morrissey dd, who was very ably supported by our Parish
Priest, Father Robert. The students were able to spend an individual moment with the Bishop when they were
anointed with the Holy Oil of Chrism on their forehead during the Rite of Confirmation. All of the students
read beautifully during the Mass and showed sincere reverence for the importance of the occasion. These
students were supported by many of the younger students from the school who formed the choir and sang like
angels! The Bishop particularly enjoyed the hymns relating to the Sacrament of Confirmation. At the
conclusion of the Mass, all of the parents, parishioners, students and staff celebrated in the school hall with a
lovely morning tea where they had the chance to speak with their new Bishop. The Confirmation students
celebrated with photographs and a wonderful Confirmation Cake, decorated with a dove, a symbol of the Holy
Spirit, created by one of the dads in the class. We thank Miss Danielle for her work in preparing the students
for the Sacrament, along with Father Robert and Bishop Michael.

‘Sock it to Poverty’ – Catholic Mission
CRAZY SOCK DAY
Once again, in this month of October, our students will be involved
in Catholic Mission’s World Mission Appeal for those in need. The
theme for this year’s World Mission Month Socktober Appeal is
“I have come so that they may have life
and have it to the full.” (John 10:10) One of the stories of the appeal takes us to Uganda, focusing on children like 13 year old Harriet, and children in similar situations from all around the world, and the need for them to receive proper healthcare and education so that they may continue to learn and grow. We ask everyone to support the work of Catholic Mission and
“Sock it to Poverty” by participating in a Crazy Sock Day on
Tuesday, 24th October. All the students are invited to wear crazy
socks in any form they desire, perhaps as lackies, scarves, gloves,
socks etc and donate a gold coin (or more) to Catholic Mission.
The Crazy Sock Day will be run in conjunction with a Free Dress
Day for all students that the Year Five/Six Class have earned for the
whole school due to their excellent behavior on camp. Students are
welcome to wear casual clothes of their choice, or their favourite
dress up costume if they desire, and match this with some crazy
socks!
We thank you for your support of Catholic Mission this month as
some of the fundraising done by Catholic Mission is often spent in
our local area – the Geraldton Diocese.
