our face book

bridging together product goals, current trends, & rapid monetization

By Hailey Spelmanhailey.spelman@gmail.com

Ads are a lazy way tomonetize your product

The success of Facebook ads depends on personalization

But I believe

How else can Facebook use personalization to monetize?

First, we look to within-Facebook product trends

1 2Focus onrediscovery

Encourage memory sharing

3 Manage &store photos

Combined with the trending success of digital → physical products

In a class at Stanford called “Good Products, Bad Products” I did a

needfinding study on the Instax Mini and nearly all participants expressed that

they enjoy this product because

having the physical photo made it more meaningful in our digital aiming world

++ Facebook’s value proposition to connect you to the people in your life

Why let websites like Shutterfly profit by sourcing Facebook’s content?

When Facebook has the capacity to provide the same product.

How scalable is newsfeed advertising? It isn’t. Our face book is. More ads → more user frustration.

How can Facebook expand at virtually no cost?By selling its own content & having a product that pays for itself.

Let’s get to the UX

❖ Navigate to the “our face book” builder❖ Start building by selecting the type of face book❖ Choose a color theme, the byline, and a title❖ Set a maximum number of pages per contributor❖ Then add contributors to the book❖ Contributors will get a notification to choose & fill

templates for their pages❖ The creator will then choose & fill the templates for

their pages❖ Completed pages will be compiled automatically❖ The “face book” creator can then edit the book❖ Get ready to share!

Here are the steps

Now let’s walk through what this might look like

Users click on “Get Started” to first choose the face book type

Users must select a book type, then a color theme & cover details

The “byline” of book authors should be limited to 30 chars to accommodate all formats

Users can easilycollaborate bysetting restrictions & guidelines

If developed further, user research would

be done to determine which guidelines and

restrictions are the most user-friendly &

effective at promoting collaboration

Add Facebookfriends, email or phone contacts to the face book

The Contributors would then receive a notification or a link to

direct them to the face book builder. For each of their pages,

they choose & fill out a template.

Question Types could include:List QuestionLong-Answer QuestionShort-Answer Question

This is my sample “profile” page

This is my sample photo page

Those are based on these templates

And filled by the user with suggested photos based on the book’s contributors & the user’s most popular photos

Once all Contributors have completed their pages,{ this can be facilitated through deadlines, reminders, “Do it for me” options & contributor opt-outs }

The pages will be automatically compiled into a book format

& the creator can edit and review the book content / page order

Once the book is ready to go, the creator & contributors canShare it or Buy it

which promotes more shareable content & clear, self-sufficient profits

Why this? Why Now?

As more and more companies push for the VR experience, Facebook can diversify and stand out by bringing users and customers back to a physical product that can actually help build relationships in the real world rather than just feed back into the digital world.

Content Content Content. Facebook’s most basic objective is to get users to post content to fill other users’ feeds. This product fills feeds: the book itself provides content, users (especially new ones) are encouraged to post more photos to fill these books, and I believe that it would promote the uploading of older photos in addition to current ones.

Positivity! My peers commonly claim that the negative content on their feed makes them use Facebook less. By sharing digital books that celebrate human connections every day, Facebook can naturally promote more positive content on the News Feed & more positivity among users.

This can be done, easily. Development would be fast because the product is based on pre-existing functionality such as invite forms, smart photo suggestions based on tags, and Layout (for Instagram). Printing can be outsourced or done in-house - either way, profitable price points can cover the costs of production.

Thank you for reading.

Sincerely,

An Avid Facebook Fan & User
