Osceola County 4-H Clubs
Greetings 4-H families! There is a lot of information to be aware of as we enter the busy summer season, so please read through this month’s newsletter so you don’t miss any deadlines or opportunities.
The 2016 Osceola County Fair Book is now online. Be sure to read though all project area rules and the fair schedule as their have been a few changes. You can find it on our website: http://www.extesion.iastate.edu/osceola/4h.
REMINDER: All animals need to be entered onto 4-H Online by midnight on Sunday, May 15th. This is a state deadline so please have all animals entered by this date and time.
The number of swine a 4-H can show at the fair has been increased from 4 animals to 5 animals, however one of those has to be from the Purebred Class. See page 19 of the Osceola County Fair Book for more information.
Reminder: Senior 4-H’er Osceola County 4-H Foundation scholarship applications are due to our office by Monday, May 2nd.
Last chance FSQA training for 4-H’ers who plan on showing animals at the fair are on May 14 and May 26 in O’Brien County. After these dates, trainings are no longer available in 2016. Call our office to register.

2016 OSCEOLA COUNTY FAIR

*The Osceola County Fair runs from Wednesday, July 13th through Saturday, July 16th.

*The 4-H Fashion Review/Share the Fun will be held during the 4-H Barbeque on Wednesday, July 13th at
approximately 5:30 p.m.
*The new county 4-H Awards Extravaganza will take place on Saturday, July 16th at 3:00 p.m. in the 4-H
Building.
*Stall Pen Requests are due Monday, June 27th.
4-H MULTI-COUNTY LIVESTOCK WORKSHOP Plan to attend the Multi-Species Livestock Workshop on Thursday, May 26th at the O’Brien County Fairgrounds
from 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. 4-H’ers will be able to register for 3 species sessions from the following -
Beef, Bucket Calf, Dairy, Swine, Sheep, Meat Goat, Dairy Goat, Rabbit, Poultry and Horse. A light meal
will be offered starting at 5:30 pm before the workshop. From 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. a last chance FSQA
training will also be available. This workshop is FREE, but pre-registration is required by Tuesday, May
24th. Online registration is preferred at: https://form.jotform.com/4Hregion1/2016-multicounty-livestock-
workshop. If you would like to mail a form in, they are available on our website at http://
4-H 2016 LIVESTOCK NOTICE ALL animals need be entered on 4-H Online (http://www.4honline.com) by Sunday, May 15th. The
animals that have gone through the weigh in process will be entered online by the ISU Extension and
Outreach staff. Families can go online and confirm that the information entered is correct. 4-H’ers whose ani-
mals do not go through the weigh in process must also be entered on 4-H online by May 15th. After this date,
NO ENTRIES MAY BE MADE! Please contact us here at the office with any questions or concerns you have about
this process. PLEASE COMPLETE THIS BEFORE MAY 15TH AS WE ARE NOT IN THE OFFICE THE 15TH!
OSCEOLA COUNTY SWINE INFORMATION 2016
If you are showing Swine at the 2016 Osceola County Fair, you need to complete a 2016 Swine
Affidavit, located on page 8 of this newsletter. This form is due to our office on Monday, May 2nd.
The Osceola County Fair Swine Program will be adding an Individual Market Purebred Breed Category
in 2016. Papers will be required to show proof of breed when weighing pigs in at the fair.
The number of swine a 4-H can bring to the fair has been increased from 4 to 5, but one of these animals must be
a Purebred. See page 19 of the Osceola County Fairbook for more information.
Also, in 2016 4-H’ers showing pigs at the 2016 Osceola County Fair will be required to provide their own wood
chips for their stall pens.
4-H CLOVER KIDS The Clover Kid program is coming to an end for the 2015-2016 school year and the future 4-H’ers have
had a great year learning about scientific themed topics! The remaining dates for Clover Kids in May are
Monday, May 9th and Tuesday, May 10th.
Reminder that all Clover Kids are eligible to bring non-livestock projects to the fair. See details on page 31
of the 2016 Osceola County Fair Book.
4-H HORSE WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
2016 Horse Workshops
Horse workshops have been scheduled for the
summer of 2016. All workshops begin at 7:00 p.m. at the
Osceola County Fairgrounds. To be eligible to show your
horse at the Osceola County Fair, you must attend at
least ONE of these workshops. Please remember that
horse riders must wear helmets at all times.

2016 STATE 4-H YOUTH CONFERENCE
Dive to New Depths! On June 28 , 29 and 30 and over 1,000 teenagers will converge on the campus of
Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, dances, a banquet, and community
service activities. If you have completed 8th grade, you are eligible to attend and since you don’t need
to be in 4-H to attend, you can invite your friends! Applications are due online by Wednesday, June 1.
Please contact us here at the office if you would like to go. In some cases, financial assistance is available. For more

First meeting: May 4th @ 6:30 p.m. - Osceola Hospital Education Room (no dogs please!).
All additional classes will be held with dogs on the following dates and times at the Osceola County Fairgrounds. In
May and June you can choose to attend either the Saturday morning meeting at 8:30 a.m. or the Monday evening
meeting at 7:00 p.m. for that week. Meeting dates to choose from are as follows:
A current rabies shot and verification record must be on file at the Osceola County Extension and Outreach office
prior to the first dog obedience class (May 4). Please contact us here at the office if you are planning to attend
obedience classes this year. Dog obedience exhibitors must attend a minimum of 1/3 of the scheduled classes to be
eligible to show at the fair. Schedule is subject to change at the superintendent’s discretion. If you have any

BOTTLE BUCKET CALF INFORMATION
2016 FOUNDATION CHICKS 4-H Foundation Chicks will once again be available to any Osceola County 4-H’ers interested in showing
Poultry at this years’ fair. Monday, May 2nd is the deadline to sign-up for 16 FREE chicks. Requirements are
that the 4-H’er shows and cares for the chicks. 2 cockerels and 2 pullets must be exhibited at the 2016
Osceola County Fair. Contact us here at the office at (712)754-3648 or mcompton@iastate.edu if you are
interested in taking part in and signing up for this great program.
The Bottle Bucket Calf project will once again be available in 2016. The 4-H BB Calf project is open to 4-H’ers in
grades 4th - 8th and calves must be born between March 1 - May 15, 2016. Open BB Calf project is for youth in
grades K - 3 and sponsored by Lori Monier at Farm Bureau Insurance. Open BB calves must be born
from April 1 - May 31, 2016. All youth participating in the BB project must fill out BB Record
Worksheets. These need to be completed and handed in to the offices by Thursday, June 30th. The BB
Show will take place on Friday, July 15th following the Market Beef Show. If you are interested in this
project and have questions or need more information, contact us here at the Extension and Outreach office.
SHEEP AND GOAT WEIGH-IN All Sheep and Meat Goats need to attend the Weigh-in on Saturday, May 7th from 8:00 a.m. - 9:30
a.m. at the Osceola County Fairgrounds. Bottle Bucket Goats (unless in the meat class) and Market
Breeding Does do not need to be weighed in but they must be tagged at the weigh-in. Please call us
here at the office to register for the weigh-in by Thursday, May 5th. Tags cost $2.00 each.
4-H T-SHIRT ORDERS We are now taking orders for 4-H T-Shirt and Polo shirt styles. If
you are interested in having a new shirt for this years’ county fair,
now is the time! If you are a 4-H’er please get your order to your
leader or drop off at the office as soon as possible. Payment is due
when you place your order. Orders forms can be found on page 9
of this newsletter. Order forms are due to the office no later than
Monday, May 2nd.

OSCEOLA 4-H CLUB AWARDS & RECOGNITION The new 4-H Awards and Recognition Committee is promoting a new approach to awards in our 4-H program.
There will be 2 Awards open to all 4-H’ers in Osceola County. Each award will be awarded to one Junior, one
Intermediate and one Senior 4-H’er at the 4-H Award Extravaganza Event on Saturday, July 16th at the 4-H
Building.
Leadership Award: This award recognizes youth who lead by example, influence and support others in a positive manner,
are active members in their 4-H club, and work toward self-improvement.
Citizenship Award: This award recognizes youth who engage in their community, assist community members, serve as
volunteers, and are committed to the well-being of their community. The nominee demonstrates personal growth and
character through community activities, 4-H club involvement, and participation in 4-H project areas.
Other awards will be offered at the club level and that information can be obtained from your 4-H club leader.
Nomination deadline for all forms is Monday, June 27th. Forms are available at our office and on our website.

Where: Education Room at Osceola County Community Hospital
Safe Food is a short course on food safety from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Human Sciences
including information on proper temperatures, hygiene, cross-contamination, and cleaning and sanitizing. This
course will help 4-H’ers, leaders, and parents better understand how to handle food in food stands, fundraisers,
and even 4-H projects! It is encouraged that every club have at least one youth representative and adult present
as well as all club leaders in order to report back to meetings and help your club successfully keep food safe!
