Outline of S1.1B
The objective of this session is to respond to the questions:
• what is an Open Badge made of?

During this session you will have the opportunity to create your own badge as a Delegate or Presenter at ePIC 2013. Many different options will be explored using a variety of resources.

Open Badges are images with metadata hard-coded into them
CC BY-SA Kyle Bowen
Visual representations ofachievements, learning, skills,
interests, competencies
They can accommodateformal & informallearning pathways
Mozilla has built (and will maintain) the plumbing
They can represent hard & softskills, peer assessment, and stackable lifelong learning
Open Badges can capture learning wherever & however itoccurs—allowing for innovation
Open Badges?(What about degrees, certificates, diplomas?)
Not simply either/or—both/and!

OpenBadgesInfrastructure(OBI)
I love badges for motivating me in
my learning!
We use metadata-infused credentials
aligned with the OBI
I’m using micro-accreditation to
make achievements more granular

SOME IDEASto get you started
• Play! Experiment! Earn your first badge at openbadges.org to see how they work.
• Think up some criteria and issue a badge to someone using badg.us
• Join the Open Badges community. Ask questions!
• Launch a pilot. What behaviours/skills/understanding are you trying to promote?
Conclusion
• Open Badges = metadata-infused credentials
• We’re now at v1.0 of the OBI
• Lots of organisations are already using badges
• We’re going to get started right now!

Outline of S1.2B
The objective of this session is to respond to the question:
• who are the people, resources and processes I need to make Open Badges work in an organisation?
During this session we will start by eliciting the particular needs of your institution then work together at establishing the main elements of your Open Badges deployment: evidence, criteria, audience (earner, issuer), backpack, etc.
Badge System Design
Badge System Design
Design a badge for your context:
• Who is your badge for?
• What skills and knowledge does the badge represent?
• What behaviours does the badge encourage?
• What do you need to do to earn the badge? (criteria)
• What artefact(s) will show that the criteria has been met? (evidence)
• Why bother earning the badge? What opportunities does it unlock? (value proposition)

Badge System Design
Design a badge system:
• What other badges exist in your ecosystem?
• Are there different levels of badges? Meta-level badges?
• What resources are required for your badge system to work?
• Who supports and recognises your badge(s)? (endorsers)
Outline of S1.3B
The objective of this session is to respond to the question:
• how can I make my Open Badge System visible and exploitable beyond the boundaries of my organisation?
During this session we explore the current options and challenges we need to take into account to establish a seamless Open Badges Infrastructure.
Going Beyond Your Org
Going Beyond Your Org
Some questions:
• How will people find your badge? (e.g. tags)
• Do you need endorsers? Why? Who?
• Would your badges be ‘interoperable’ / a bridge between your system and another system?
• Could your badge system accommodate someone coming in with badges from elsewhere similar to yours? How?
