A SENIOR citizen was res-cued by strangers after beingambushed and left on theground with a broken wristoutside Darwin’s majorshopping centre.

The victim’s son, JustinHardwick of Wulagi, said hewanted the three good Sa-maritans who saved her tocome forward so he couldproperly thank them.

‘‘We don’t know whetherone of the youths opened thedoor and dragged her out, asfrom what I can gather shewas on the ground,’’ he said.

‘‘But the good Samaritansyelled at these guys and theyscrambled away.

‘‘In the emergency depart-ment a paramedic came upto me and said whoeverthese good Samaritans werethey deserved braveryawards and it could have es-

calated rapidly if they didnot intervene.’’

The alleged assault hap-pened about 7pm on Tuesdayin Casuarina Square’sLinton St carpark.

Mr Hardwick said detailswere sketchy because hethinks his mother may havepassed out.

He believed she was sit-ting in her Nissan Micrahatchback when eight youngmen — described as Aborig-inal and aged between 14 and20 — stopped her car, sur-rounding it and hitting at it.

Mr Hardwick said hismother was fine after anoperation on her wrist yes-terday and he wanted tothank the emergency serv-ices, the emergency depart-

ment and the CasuarinaSquare Shopping Centre.

‘‘My mum is very resilientand tough but she is reallyshocked and was traumat-ised,’’ he said.

‘‘My mum is well knownthrough the community forvolunteering and work shedoes with under-privilegedchildren. It can happen toyour mum, it happened tomy mum.’’

Detective Sergeant MattAllen said the men were lastspotted heading for theKmart entrance.

A FIGHTING barra met itsmatch in a Territory fishoafter being attacked by acrocodile and a shark.

Welding subcontractorAndrew Brown, 51, was de-prived of his dream catch —a ‘‘metrey’’ — when he gaffedthe fish at his secret spot onan estuary near Wadeye,150km west of Darwin.

‘‘It was missing its tail,’’ hesaid. ‘‘The whole thing wassurreal — there was a big dis-turbance under the waterand this big fish came flyingat the boat, so I hooked it.’’

Mr Brown said the barra,with a 75cm girth, had a gashdown its back that lookedlike it was made by a croc,but the clean bite where itstail had been was shark-like.

He said his thrashingcatch, in ‘‘perfect’’ conditionapart from the missing tail,would have measured wellabove one metre before itwas chomped on Sunday.

It was shortened to 95.5cm.‘‘I can’t claim it,’’ the

fisherman said.‘‘I’m still waiting to catch

my first metre-long barra.We haven’t eaten this one —I’m keeping it in the freezerto show people.’’

Mr Brown, a Victoria Dalyshire councillor, said a five-metre crocodile was lurkingnext to his car when he cameback from fishing on Mondaynight, and another was lyingon the opposite bank. ‘‘It’s abit scary when you’re in alittle tinny,’’ he said.

Drivers dinkum about not collecting faresDARWIN Bus Servicesdrivers yesterday voted notto collect fares from the pub-lic and not to wear uniformsto work today.

Transport Workers UnionSA/NT secretary, RayWyatt, said at this stage it isan indefinite action.

But the NT Government

will continue to utilise Bus-Link services, which willcover about 70 per cent ofthe routes.

‘‘Darwin Bus drivers whoshow up for work tomorrowwill ‘fill the gaps’ with theaim of providing a completeservice,’’ said TransportMinister Peter Styles.

‘‘By continuing to utiliseBusLink services, the De-partment of Transport willcontinue to collect fares onmost routes.’’

He said the departmentwill operate the normal time-table, which is available on-line and at all interchanges.

drivers rejected the Govern-ment’s pay offer of 3 per centper annum over four years.

They want 4 per cent perannum over three years aswell as job reclassification.

Buses will run on allroutes, and all Express, Ru-ral and Mindil Market serv-ices will continue to run.
