The victim’s son, Justin Hardwick of Wulagi, said he wanted the three good Sa- maritans who saved her to come forward so he could properly thank them. ‘‘We don’t know whether one of the youths opened the door and dragged her out, as from what I can gather she was on the ground,’’ he said. ‘‘But the good Samaritans yelled at these guys and they scrambled away. ‘‘In the emergency depart- ment a paramedic came up to me and said whoever these good Samaritans were they deserved bravery awards and it could have es- calated rapidly if they did not intervene.’’ The alleged assault hap- pened about 7pm on Tuesday in Casuarina Square’s Linton St carpark. Mr Hardwick said details were sketchy because he thinks his mother may have passed out. He believed she was sit- ting in her Nissan Micra hatchback when eight young men — described as Aborig- inal and aged between 14 and 20 — stopped her car, sur- rounding it and hitting at it. Mr Hardwick said his mother was fine after an operation on her wrist yes- terday and he wanted to thank the emergency serv- ices, the emergency depart- ment and the Casuarina Square Shopping Centre. ‘‘My mum is very resilient and tough but she is really shocked and was traumat- ised,’’ he said. ‘‘My mum is well known through the community for volunteering and work she does with under-privileged children. It can happen to your mum, it happened to my mum.’’ Detective Sergeant Matt Allen said the men were last spotted heading for the Kmart entrance. Andrew Brown from Wadeye missed out on his metre barra. He says a croc attacked the fish, then a shark bit off its tail and this is what is left — 95.5cm Fisho’s dream catch comes with sting in the tail By ELLIE TURNER A FIGHTING barra met its match in a Territory fisho after being attacked by a crocodile and a shark. Welding subcontractor Andrew Brown, 51, was de- prived of his dream catch — a ‘‘metrey’’ — when he gaffed the fish at his secret spot on an estuary near Wadeye, 150km west of Darwin. ‘‘It was missing its tail,’’ he said. ‘‘The whole thing was surreal — there was a big dis- turbance under the water and this big fish came flying at the boat, so I hooked it.’’ Mr Brown said the barra, with a 75cm girth, had a gash down its back that looked like it was made by a croc, but the clean bite where its tail had been was shark-like. He said his thrashing catch, in ‘‘perfect’’ condition apart from the missing tail, would have measured well above one metre before it was chomped on Sunday. It was shortened to 95.5cm. ‘‘I can’t claim it,’’ the fisherman said. ‘‘I’m still waiting to catch my first metre-long barra. We haven’t eaten this one — I’m keeping it in the freezer to show people.’’ Mr Brown, a Victoria Daly shire councillor, said a five- metre crocodile was lurking next to his car when he came back from fishing on Monday night, and another was lying on the opposite bank. ‘‘It’s a bit scary when you’re in a little tinny,’’ he said. Drivers dinkum about not collecting fares DARWIN Bus Services drivers yesterday voted not to collect fares from the pub- lic and not to wear uniforms to work today. Transport Workers Union SA/NT secretary, Ray Wyatt, said at this stage it is an indefinite action. But the NT Government will continue to utilise Bus- Link services, which will cover about 70 per cent of the routes. ‘‘Darwin Bus drivers who show up for work tomorrow will ‘fill the gaps’ with the aim of providing a complete service,’’ said Transport Minister Peter Styles. ‘‘By continuing to utilise BusLink services, the De- partment of Transport will continue to collect fares on most routes.’’ He said the department will operate the normal time- table, which is available on- line and at all interchanges. Darwin Bus Services drivers rejected the Govern- ment’s pay offer of 3 per cent per annum over four years. They want 4 per cent per annum over three years as well as job reclassification.
