Estar✓Indicates location

Estar ✓Indicates a condition or state of

being that is temporary/happening at a given moment in time.

Ex: Cómo estás?Estoy bien, gracias.

Let me clarify this last thing…if you are describing a state of being that

changes, use estar. For example, if you say you are tired, use estar, because

tiredness is not a defining/permanent aspect of your personality.

Soooo… Estar is used to express transitory qualities.

Ser is used to express a FUNDAMENTAL quality. It

expresses the essence of a person or thing, who or what it is.

Una historia breve de Honduras

Honduras has a long history of military control. From 1955-1979 Honduras was under the control of the PLH,

Partido Liberal de Honduras.

In the 1980’s, the US supported the election of Honduras’ first civilian government in decades. The

president elected was a medical doctor named Roberto Suazo Córdova.

Excitement over this new civilian government was short lived. In its Cold War ferver, the US government installs military units and training centers across the borders of

Honduras and El Salvador in an effort to defeat the newly installed liberal party in El Salvador. This war

against the communist leftist movement is referred to as the “Contra” effort.

The new liberal party of El Salvador, known as the Sandinista party, was considered to be highly

dangerous by the US government, who felt that it would introduce communism (which had already been

introduced to Cuba) to the rest of Central America.

In an effort to counteract this Communist threat, the Honduran government, with the aid of the United

States, brought commander in chief of military forces Gustavo Adolfo Martínez to power in 1982.

Although he only held this position for two years, he was responsible for condoning the death, torture, and

“disappearance” of hundreds of supposed civilian “subversives” mostly consisting of students, peasant and labor leaders, and progressive religious figures.

Prior to the 1980’s, Honduras had had a relatively peaceful history, especially when compared to other Latin American countries. The following poem was

written by a leftist revolutionary in Honduras during this period of violence and tension between the

conservative military government of Honduras, and the leftists who supported the Sandinista party in El

Salvador.
