Mbhashe municipality is situated in the south eastern part of the Eastern Cape Province, and is bound by the Qhora River in the south to Mncwasa River in the north along the Indian Ocean. Mbhashe has earned the name from the beautiful river called Mbhashe which flows from the banks of Ngcobo flowing through Idutywa, Gatyana (Willowvale) and Xhora (Elliotdale). Mbhashe comprises of three towns, namely Idutywa, Gatyana, Xhora and numerous rural settlements. The area also boats the head offices of the AmaXhosa Kingdom at Nqadu Great Place.
HOME OF NATURAL WONDERSDwesa and Cweba Nature ReservesThe indigenous forests at Dwesa/Cwebe have been protected since 1891 and 1893 respectively. The forests are predominantly evergreen, but there are also sensitive dune forests in the reserves. These unique reserves are separated by the Mbashe river.
DwesaDwesa Nature Reserve is the bigger of the two reserves (3900Ha) and is situated on the western side of the Mbashe River. Visitors will find a
campsite with a few Chalets, situated next to a small estuary which leads into the ocean.

A warm and friendly welcome to the OR Tambo District Municipality on behalf of the two million people who live in this beautiful region. Our geo-graphical area covers some of the last remaining unspoilt natural beauty in this country.
The district has produced some of the greatest sons and daughters of this century. The people of the Eastern Cape are proud to walk the same path, drink from the same spring and wake up under the same sun as did Nelson Mandela, Oliver Reginald Tambo and others. A Liberation Heritage Route guides visitors on a journey through the regions role in the long walk to freedom, from the earliest days of the history of liberation to the dawn of democracy.
The Wild Coasts natural beauty will provide abiding memories, whether through the coastal wilderness or the dramatic interior. Both offer a spectacular
landscape. Unique plants, rare and endangered birds and wildlife, indigenous forests, mangrove swamps, estuaries and geological wonders, all against a back-drop of crystal waters and white sands, lure adven-turous visitors.
You can take long walks on remote beaches, snorkel in clear rock pools, fish from ski boats or the shore, paddle up wild rivers, laze beside picturesque la-goons or hike precipitous cliffs. Inland there are vast forests, deep gorges, rolling hills and valleys criss-crossed by rivers and streams, the hills all dotted with the picturesque homesteads of friendly people.
Whether you are here on business, on holiday or vis-iting friends or family, we hope you enjoy your stay.
We Welcome Youto the O.R. Tambo District
The home of the legends.

Heroes and HeritageNelson Mandela MuseumThis museum promises an emotional journey through history. It comprises three sites which, when visited consecutively, allow visitors to walk in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela.
The Liberation Heritage RouteThe National Heritage Council, Eastern Cape Depart-ment of Arts and Culture and the Nelson Mandela
National Museum are establishing a Liberation Heri-tage Route to reconstruct South Africas liberation struggle.
The Pondo RevoltStruggles against the Nationalist Partys Bantu Authorities Act were fought in the Transkei, where the resistance culminated in the Pondo revolt. The events are related at the Nelson Mandela Museum.
Natural Beauty and DiversityThe vegetation of the OR Tambo district can be di-vided into three zones running roughly north-south: the coastal belt; inland of this a belt of savannah; and
then grasslands. In reality its a lot more diverse due to the river gorges slicing up the topography.
Pick your routeThe Wild Coast and Interior provide a web of roads through spectacular scenery from precipitous coast-al cliffs and remote beaches to dramatic, forested gorges and gentle hills dotted with colourful home-steads. The authorities are hard at work improving infrastructure, as a result, some rural roads require high-clearance vehicles and drivers must be alert at all times to the presence of livestock and horses.
Travel the N2Travel the N2, the first of three major routes linking the region is the N2 to Mthatha.
Travel the T310Travel the T310 to get to Coffee Bay and Hole in the Wall, travel south from Mthatha along the N2 for 20km to Viedgiesville. Take the T310 for 81km to Coffee Bay. This links via a 9km coastal road to Hole in the Wall.
Travel the R61The R61 is your gateway from Mthatha to both the interior and the coastal hub of the region, Port St Johns. It continues east to Lusikisiki, Flagstaff, Mbizana and, finally, the Umtamvuna River, the border between Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

Protected CoastThe Pondoland Marine Protected Area, proclaimed in 2004, extends some 15km out to sea and from the Umtamvuna River to Port St Johns. Some 800 species of marine fish occur here, many migratory. Whales and dolphins are common and Southern Right whales often enter shallow waters to calve.
There are plans in place for the creation of a 50 000-hectare coastal bioreserve. This would extend across 80km, from the northern bank of the Umzimvubu River at Port St Johns to the southern bank of the Umtamvuna River in the north at Port Edward. The idea is to establish a Pondoland Park, with the Mkambati Reserve forming the primary development core.
Bird Watching The OR Tambo district is also a potential Christmas stocking for birding enthusiasts. Several bird clubs and experts are, increasingly, visiting various sites and specialist bird tour operators are taking an interest in the region. This is probably the only area in the country where one may see the rare Egyptian vulture.
Mkambati Nature ReserveMkambati is an 8 000ha reserve which extends 10km along the coast between the Msikaba and Mtentu rivers. Its unique swamp forest, open grassland and ravines provide habitats for a variety of plants and animals.
Silaka Nature ReserveThis 400ha reserve lies in the forested valley between Second Beach and Sugarloaf Rock just south of Port St Johns. Bird Rock, just off the beach, is a favourite shad-fishing spot.
Hluleka Nature ReserveSome 772ha in extent, it is on the coast midway between Coffee Bay and Port St Johns, some 90km from Mthatha. Established on the old Strachans Grant farm, it is made up of two magnificent for-est reserves and its accommodation facilities have recently been refurbished.
Luchaba Nature ReserveLuchaba Nature Reserve is a 460ha reserve which lies adjacent to the Mthatha Dam and is home to a variety of wildlife. Various species of grazing herbi-vores such as hartebeest and Burchells zebra have been introduced.
