Report : Session on personal body safety ( Primary Wing )

Date - 25.10.17 -27.10.17 (for classes II, III & IV ) 04.10.17- 06.10.17 ( for class V )

Venue - Respective Classrooms (II –IV) & Daffodil G 73 (for class V )

Purpose - To generate awareness among the students about their person body safety

.

Children who require the guardianship, care & guidance of adults are among the most vulnerable and

innocent victims of crimes like sexual abuse / exploitation. It is evident from the media reports that both

boys and girls become the victims of such unfortunate incidents at a tender age when they do not even know

what is happening with them. Due to social taboos parents / teachers are often hesitant to discuss sensitive

issues with the children even when they realize that it is essential. The fact is that it is the joint

responsibility of the parents as well as school authorities to sensitize children/students so that they are able

to differentiate between good and bad touches in an appropriate manner and respond accordingly.

Keeping this in view, we have organized counseling sessions for the students in classes II-V in order to

educate them about their personal body safety. The sessions for classes II –IV were conducted by the class

teachers & the session for class V was conducted by Mrs. Sujata Banerjee ( counselor ) & Dr Monika

Tripathi ( school doctor ).

The sessions for class V was conducted covering two sections at a time to maximize the scope of

interaction between the students & the counselor. During the session, students were explained the

following aspects related to their body and its safety with the help of a power point presentation :

Identification of the private parts & personal spaces in one’s body

No touch regions in of the body along with the exceptional situations when this rule is not followed

Identifying good & bad touches

Appropriate manner of responding to bad touches

Proper utilization of physical & mental energy for self development

Students were informed about the complaint box for girls & when it is to be used. They were also

informed about the special committee in school appointed to look into complaints ( if any) regarding

personal body safety.

Following this, a video was shown to the students which narrated a short story explaining each of the topics

that had already been explained during the session .The video further reinforced their learning.

Activity : Oral Quiz

Towards the end of the session, students were asked multiple choice questions to assess their receptivity &

understanding . Students participated in the quiz very enthusiastically. The confusions/ doubts that came

into light from their responses were clarified by the counselor .

Overall the session was informative and aimed at empowering the students to differentiate between good /

bad by adopting an age appropriate and non threatening approach so that they can take care of themselves

and effectively deal with it.

Report: Awareness Programme on Child Sexual Abuse ( Nursery – Class I )

Date - 01.09.17 – 10.09.17

Venue - Daffodils ( G- 73 )

Purpose - To explain students about Child Sexual Abuse in a simple yet interactive manner

Children often become the victims of sexual abuse although only few cases get reported. Due to social

norms, there is still a grave silence surrounding this issue. Till today many parents and teachers don’t feel

comfortable to talk to their children about child sexual abuse (CSA) as openly as they should. Even when

the child is not informed, he/she does not know what to do in such situations.

Keeping these aspects in view, the students in our Pre primary Wing (classes Nursery, KG & Class I) were

shown the movie ‘Komal’ an animation film released by Childline India, which had won the National

Award in 2015 under the category the Best Educational Film. It covers the sensitive topic of child sexual

abuse in a very simple and interactive manner and informs children what they should do to protect

themselves in the face of abuse.

It is a 10 minute video which begins with the story of Komal, a 7-year-old girl who is abused by her father’s

friend, and moves on to show what her family does after she shares the truth with her mother.

It highlights the important fact that children should not feel that they are the ones who have done

something wrong, and should make sure that they talk to somebody they trust & focuses on both boys &

girls Not only does it talk about something that is always veiled behind dark covers, but it does so in such a

simple manner that it becomes easy for people to relate to it. The clear way in which it brings out an

extremely important message is commendable.

We organized the movie show with the purpose of generating awareness among the children about

personal body safety .They were trained to identify ‘good & bad touches ’ & explained how to respond

in such situations .The movie show followed by the counselling session was conducted under the

supervision of class teachers keeping in mind that at this tender age they will feel comfortable to discuss

such issues with their class teachers only The concerned class teachers have explained all the aspects

related to sexual abuse in an age appropriate manner during the session.

Activity

After the film, a recapitulation activity was conducted where the students were asked what they have

learned. Following this, a quiz was conducted in which students were asked few questions on the topics

that were discussed during the session.

Venue - Respective Classrooms

Purpose - To make children aware of personal personal safety & its importance.

Safety means protecting ourselves from any dangerous object /situation that may hurt us or

experience.

Keeping these facts in view, we have decided to counsel the students to make them aware of

videos :

Safety at home

Objects of danger at home

being at a safe distance from the strangers. This story telling activity further enhanced the

interest level of the students.

Report: Session on safety rules (Classes II & III) Date - 18.08.17

Venue - Auditorium

Purpose - To generate awareness among the students about the safety rules to be followed while at home,

school, on the road , playground , swimming pools & other places.

Child safety is essential for healthy growth of children. In this regard, the adults must take every possible effort to

ensure that the children stay away from risks which may adversely affect them physically/ mentally. A child’s ability

to understand personal safety develops through education initiated by parents as well as teachers at an early age and

later through experience gained during exposure to different life situations. Therefore, they must be compulsorily

taught the safety lessons (at home, in school) so that they are able to identify dangers & take the necessary measures to

protect themselves.

Considering these aspects, our school had organized a mass counselling programme on 18th August 2017 to

generate awareness among the students in classes II & III about the safety rules to be followed in different places

usually visited by them. The session was conducted by Mrs. Sujata Banerjee, counsellor of the school.

At the beginning of the session, the counsellor explained the meaning & importance of safety including personal body

safety. Following this, students were also made alert about the common threats to their personal safety and were

taught the safety rules through an age appropriate animated video. The following areas were specially emphasized in

the session:

Personal body safety rules

Road safety rules

Safety rules to be followed while playing outside ( parks, garden ,swimming pool etc )

Safety rules to be followed in school

Safety rules to be followed when at home

Safety rules to be followed in public places

Students could easily relate to the animated video story. They were also explained in detail about the importance of

following safety rules. The session was concluded with a request to all the class teachers for initiating further

discussion with the students on the topic discussed during the session. Furthermore, the students were also

encouraged to share what they have learned in that session with their parents and siblings.
