Novell’s Virtualization Strategy
StrategyProvide the right technology to customers depending on need
Not a debate between open or closed source technologies
Integrate virtualization technology to support Novell’s larger data center strategy Incorporate virtualization solutions to provide customers value at a functional and long-term strategic level
NetWare & 64-Bit architectures64-bit NetWare Kernel is not planned
Virtual Machine Monitor and Driver Domains support all 64 bit hardware architectures
NetWare will be able to run in 32-bit mode on x86-64 architectures
EM64T, AMD64 etc.In this mode NetWare will be fully functional as a 32-bit VM while allowing other virtual machine types such as SUSE Linux to fully benefit from the additional address space available on such architectures
Managing the Virtual Data CenterManagement of VMM and Guest OS will be CIM based:
Local or remote management consolesCIM based management will allow for a variety of management consoles from a number of vendors to be used
Allow for differentiationNovell will not lock management vendors out
CIM based provides will enable virtual machine management
Startup and shutdownLive migration
Policy Based Utility ComputingStrategy:
Directory enabled, policy based, utility computingDirectory Enabled
Store virtual machine objects in the directoryCluster objects, virtual machines, physical nodes, resource templates, pre-configured OS configurations
Policy engines to monitor and manage workloadVirtual storage to enable fluid computing within the virtual data center
