ManagementThe North Slope Borough is approximately the size ofMinnesota and is comprised of 8 Inupiat villages ranging in size from ~ 185 people to ~ 3,000 people in Barrow
It is unique that a municipality government has a wildlifedepartment-Our primary responsibilities are to:
conduct research and monitoring of subsistence resources:
bowhead & beluga whales, seals, fish, caribou, arctic fox, and waterfowl
document harvest and harvest location data from all 8 North Slope villages
Respond to hunters concerns (e.g. animal health issues) and to requests from the AEWC
Participate in the IWC to maintain the bowhead quota
Review State and Federal on- and off-shore oil and gas leasing, and development plans through the NEPA process (EA’s and EIS’s), and work closely with the NSB Permitting Department
