Polish customs

Polskie zwyczaje

NEW YEAR New Year - January 1st

is a holiday celebrated at the beginning of a new calendar year. To establish the date was not a simple matter. In Poland, January 1st is the day of the New Year of 1630, on this day family and friends made a wish for the coming year to be happy, or at least not worse than the year that is leaving.

ADVENT

It is a four -week waiting period for the feast of Christmas , the time of concentration, fasting, prayer and worship . Advent was a time when in the past the neighbors organised meetings when they carried out household chores. The time passed chatting , gossiping, matching young couples and carol singing . When the boys go from house to house with the crib , singing Christmas carols was a sign that the Nativity of the Lord is near.As far as the ecclesiastical rites , the so called „Roraty” in Polish or Morning Prayer – (Holy Mass pleading for the coming of the Savior) is celebrated in all the churches during Advent at dawn

ASH WEDNESDAY

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent in the Western Christian calendar. Occurring 46 days before Easter, it is a movable feast.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this 40-day liturgical period of prayer and fasting or abstinence.

Ash Wednesday derives its name from

the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a celebration and remminder of human mortality and as a sign of mourning and repentance to God.

The ashes used are typically gathered from the burning of the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday

MARZANNA

Marzanna is a pagan springtime festival in Poland that signals the end of winter. It usually takes place on the fourth Sunday of Lent. On this day a straw or rag effigy of Marzanna is constructed, sometimes by school children who then throw her into a river or a lake to “drown” her because the effigy is imbued with the negative qualities of the long, cold winter. This old custom predates Christian rites, so Marzanna is not universally observed throughout Poland.

Chrismas

Christmas Day, called the first holiday by the Poles, is spent with the family at home. This is a day of enjoyment, for Jesus was born. On Christmas Day, people start to observe the weather very closely. It is believed that each day foretells the weather for a certain month of the following year.

PALM SUNDAY

Palm Sunday is a Christian's movable feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in all four canonical Gospels.

In many Christian churches, Palm Sunday includes a procession of the assembled worshipers carrying palms, representing the palm branches the crowd scattered in front of Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem.

ALL SAINTS - All Souls' Day ( November 1st and 2nd )

All Saints' Day (also known as All Hallows, Solemnity of All Saints, or The Feast of All Saints) is celebrated on 1st November in Poland in honour of all the saints, known and unknown. It is the day before All Souls' Day
