....FOR
THE
DELAY, BUT.....
Page 1
Hi there!
It’s been a long time since our last news-
letter. We would like to apologise for the
delay but the beginning of the second term
has been really intense for both teachers
and our reporters, plus we have had some
technological problems at the last minute.
Despite all the inconvenients, we only
wanted to wish you a very nice term and
we mainly wanted to say that...

ENGLISH DESSERTS
FAIRY CAKES is a small cake for a person,
often cooked in a mold similar to that used
to make cupcakes or muffins. The Fairy Cakes
recipe is similar to English muffins or
cupcakes in French, only varying in size,
some spices and how to make the dough.
Sticky toffee
The Sticky Toffee is a traditional British
dessert. It consists of a sponge cake soaked
in syrup of prunes and toffee covered.
Serve with custard or vanilla ice cream.
It is considered one of the five classic
British desserts.
triffle pumpkin pie
The pumpkin pie is a traditional dessert in
England, Ireland, USA and Canada. The ca-
ke consists of a pumpkin based custard, va-
rying the color of orange to brown in a sim-
ple shell baked pumpkin, rarely with an

with ground nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger,
and is traditionally served with whipped
cream.

LET’S MAKE THEM
DISAPPEAR
TRIP TO BARCELONA
The students of 4ºESO are going to Bar-
celona at the end of the second term, last
week of March. They will soon start to
buy many things for the trip such as clo-
thes, packages etc.
During the trip the students will visit
many places, for example the Camp Nou,
Port Aventura, Las Ramblas or La Sagra-
da Familia Cathedral. Besides, they will
have the opportunity to do many different
activities.

WE WILL FINISH WITH THOSE EXTRA
KILOS...AFTER CHRISTMAS
Nougat, shortbreads, marzipan, carameli-
zed almonds etc are some of the delicious
cakes to be enjoyed at Christmas but they
usually get a place on our hips and bellies
during the rest of the year. They have a de-
licious taste but the consumption of these
products in large amounts causes an increa-
se of weight and fat which is unhealthy and
make us unattractive.
Therefore, it is usual that after Christmas
many people join sport centres and gyms in
their cities to get rid of those extra kilos.
Doing more sport usually is usually among
our New Year’s resolutions.
It is the beginning of what we call “Ope-
ración Polvorón”, whereas other people de-
cide to give up smoking in January or start
to study English, others joing a gym.
Once we find the activity we enjoy doing,
we start going to the gym more often. That
will help us get rid of those kilos we have
put on during the Christmas season.

IT’S CARNIVAL TIME!!
Every year, in February or March, a wonderful party called Carnival is celebrated all over
the world. It is said that the best Carnival in the world takes place in Tenerife because mi-
llions of people dress up, sing and dance in the streets for a few days.
In Spain, the best Carnival is in Cádiz. People do not usually dress up as elegant as in
Tenerife, but the atmosphere is much better here in Cádiz.
I love the Carnival in Cádiz because I usually have a great time with my friends and
relatives. I laugh a lot and sing, dance etc and we do not go to sleep during all night.
This year, we have made a group and we are going to sing along in the streets with
many other chirigotas. Carnival is going to be celebrated on 22nd and 23rd February in
La Barca de la Florida. I hope you don’t miss it out! It is going to be great fun!

WE PARTICIPATED IN THE STUDENTS’ STRIKE
A strike followed by 85% of public school students in Spain according to the media de-
monstrated the discontent in the field of education in our country. While the Government
plays by cutting welfare, young people are suffering the consequences, that is why in the
last strike classmates took banners and took the streets in protest. Banners with phrases such
as “education is not for sale, it must be defended” or “how many banners do we need to be
taken seriously?” marched through the streets of Jerez informing citizens that the students
from the “IES Vega del Guadalete” are aware that cuts for education are cuts for the future”.
“Spain for the change and the change will change us”. Not only education, the health system
or pensions are being seriously affected. This country is paying for the mistakes of people who
will never miss these basic needs. By Ana Castillo 1ºBach.-A
WHO ARE THEY?
Teachers were also young a long time ago...or maybe not so long ago. Can you recognise
these two teachers? Do they look familiar to you?
If you want to make sure you know the answer...you will have to wait for the next “Wake
up” newsletter. We’ll let you know about their names!
