Technology 101 How & When to use Technology in the Classroom for the Effective Teacher

Dr. Roland “Buddy” Weldon

Technology in Motion

Welcome to Teaching! Today’s Agenda…

Teaching Philosophy and Advice. Microsoft Windows/Office Basics. What Resources Are Available Tools for the Classroom Teacher Online collaboration via Moodle.

Teaching Philosophy

Top 10 Things you don’t learn while in college.

As an educator I had to do 3 things in order for my students to be successful in the classroom. Establish an environment that allows for all

students to be successful in your classroom. Be consistent in your actions. Communicate your expectations.

Past Advice – “Selective Amnesia, Buttons, Dancing and First Years”

Try to forget the bad things that a student does, remember the good.

“Let it go”, don’t let a student control your behavior.

Don’t “dance” with the student…be consistent ---broken recorder.

Don’t be a 15 year teacher, be a teacher in your 15th first year.

Who is “Bubba” or “Bubbet”?

Establish an Environment for learning…

Methods that your content is delivered in. (multi-modal).

Room arrangement. (Efficient use of space, clutter?)

Cultivate a setting that promotes learning and excites the students.

Science of Teaching

Be Consistent…Be Fair

The most effective teachers are the one that the students know… the Agenda for the day when they come in… the rhythm in which you teach…(don’t be

Farris Buller’s teacher). Are Proactive not Reactive. Your

interactions and responses are insightful…thought provoking…but are also what is expected from your students. (This takes time to cultivate as a new teacher)

Art of Teaching

Expectations Communicated?

Continue to repeat the expectations (and rules) in your Learning Community.

Routines are necessary. (Advanced Organizers, Newsletters, etc.)

Classroom management (move your buttons).

The students should know what is coming. (even when your note there) If there is a substitute; your class should run

like clockwork.

Technology Literacy Standards for Teachers

Knowledge of available and emerging technologies that support the learning of all students.

Knowledge of the wide range of technologies that support and enhance instruction, including classroom and school resources as well as distance learning and online learning opportunities.

Ability to integrate technology into the teaching of all content areas.

Ability to facilitate students’ individual and collaborative use of technology, including classroom resources as well as distance and online learning opportunities when available and appropriate.

Ability to use technology to assess student progress and manage records.

Ability to evaluate students’ technology proficiency and students’ technology‑based products within content areas.

How do we incorporate technology into your job?

The common mistake is we try to add THE next innovative device into the classroom, instead of identifying the needs of the student

THEN, choose what is needed for the teacher to teach and the student to learn!

Ok….Where to start…

Know how to organize your desktop. Identify tools that help you teach.

Microsoft Windows/Office Basics.Let’s Get Organized!!!

Desktop Basics Toolbar Alignment Similarities with Microsoft Office

Suite of programs. Folder and File Management

practices.

Desktop Basics – 4 components

Start Button –portal to all functions in Windows

Active Taskbar – shortcuts and displays all open programs in current session.

Icons- pictorial representation of shortcuts to files, folders, and webpages.

Wallpaper- makes the desktop “look pretty”

Toolbar Alignment

Order of Toolbars Title, Menu, Standard, Formatting, and the Drawing on the bottom.Watch for docking issues.Lost icons?Unnecessary toolbars (this applies

to Internet Explorer as well)

Similarities with Microsoft Office Suite of programs.

Note common functions among the programs (a strength of Office).

Note the purpose of using each program. Word – word processing, flyers, possibly

webpages. Excel –for spreadsheets (organizing data

and calculations) PowerPoint- for delivering content and

information to students.

Folder and File Management practices.

Mr. Weldon’s Suggestions Organize your desktop. (you will

develop a system---don’t have a busy desktop!)

Name and categorize your folders on your desktop.

Keep digital and hard copy of pertinent information.

If you lose a file… Proper Search message.

Overview of Windows

Awareness of Windows Version (XP today)

Management of Files and Folders Name and coding Layout and window sizes

Recommended practices for saving Date them Careful with redundancy issues.

Issue #1 ----My computers are really slow online!

Google Chrome may be your answer. Easy to download. Easy to use. Faster than explorer. Few “issues”

What resources are available?

Does your textbook have a web presence?

Are there other teachers that have “digitized” your curriculum materials?

Do you know where to find online materials?

Does your textbook have a web presence?

Most textbooks have web-based resources that you and your students can use. Study Guides Practice Tests

McGraw-Hill Pearson (Prentice Hall)

CD’s are also available that go with may books!

Are there other teachers that have “digitized” your curriculum materials?

What had the previous teacher used? Is there an “equivalent teacher” (i.e.

peer)at a near-by school?

What technologies do you have to present these materials with? ---what are the potential barriers?

Do you know where to find online materials?

YouTube

The largest collection of videos on the Internet (and yes, these is A LOT of good and bad about www.youtube.com) Major issues is inappropriateness of

content ---”related videos” and the “comments” provided below.

Many school systems block YouTube and it is part of the Acceptable User Policy.

YouTube --- How to “Clean” a Video

Use the YTD (YouTube Downloader) program. This converts the video into a MP4 file. Transferable to other devices. Or upload into TeacherTube

(recommend privatizing)

Conclusion When using existing/emerging

technologies ask yourself this… Does it improve the quality of your

instruction? Does it improve the learning opportunities for

your students? Does it improve your efficiency

professionally?

If the answer is YES…by all means, incorporate this innovation into your classroom

As you leave today…
