What neighborhoods do you pass through when moving from the “Social Safeway,” south along Wisconsin Ave., and east along P St. to Dupont Circle? Where are the boundaries of those neighborhoods?

The Question

2Research

I survey 10 friends and ask them to outline their perception of DC neighborhood boundaries. I asked more than 10 peoples but the ones who did not participate says they do not pay attention to DC neighborhoods. All the participants comes from a variety of backgrounds. Some lived in DC area their whole life, some recently moved into DC from out of the state for work, and some lives in MD or VA.

3

Some were very careful when they drew their boundaries. They took their time outlining which streets intersect to creates these neighborhood boundaries. Some drew very quickly any shape of an area they felt was a certain neighborhood. All of them rely on landmarks such as Metro stations, stores, and parks to help identify their neighborhoods.

4

Every participants drew and outline on a black-and-white map of DC I provided for them. Everyone felt there was a right anwser of where the boundaries are, which there are but I wanted their perspective.

I showed this image and every participant drew on this.

15Drawings to Graph

From the outlines and drawing, I create a graph that combines all the research into one. There are 10 color layer representing a neighborhood. Each neighborhood color layer is 30% of the original color opacity and laid over an actual DC map. To show you all the different perspective of where all the participant believe the neighborhood boundaries are. Layer that are close to a forming solid color means that area is most-likely universally agree on to be that neighborhood.
