Three Mescalero boys are beingquestioned in connection with thestabbing of a 29-year-old Mescaleroman early Monday, a police officialsaid Thesday.
Capt. Alfred La paz of the U.S.Bureau of Indian Affairs said theman, who had been stabbed at leastfive times with a 3- to 4-inch knifeblade, was in stable conditionTuesday afternoon at.the MescaleroIndian Health Service Hospital onthe reservation.
La paz said he is withholding thevictim's name until authorities interview members of his family today. The nwnes of the boys arrested arebeing withheld because they are juveniles, he said.
La paz said the stabbing apparently resulted from argument at anearly morning party in the PenaHousing area of the reservation.
"Several boys jumped him. Andafter that somebody took him back tohis aunt's house, and that's wherethey found him," La paz said.
The man had been stabbed threeor four tim.es in the lower back, oncein the back of the head and again inthe face above the left eye, La pazsaid.
He said doctors are still unsurewhether the man will retain the useof the left eye.
The man was outside the homewhere the party was being held about4 a.m. when he was attacked. 'IWohours later family members foundhim outside his aunt's house in thePalmer Loop area of the reservation,La Paz said.
The victim was taken to LincolnCounty Medical Center and thenmoved to the Mescalero hospitalMonday afternoon.
None of the boys arrested haveyet been charged with the stabbing, which would be categorized as anaggravated assault with a deadlyweapon. La paz said.
The attack on the man, who wasidentified as a fonner employee withthe U.S. Forest Service and is nowunemployed, was not gang relatedbut the result of an ongoing feud, Lapaz said.

Capitan's Head Start programhas a new home until a pennanentsite can be arranged.
With the f'mancial help of theLincoln County Commission, the program can open on time after LaborDay at the Capitan CommunityChurch near the school complex, saidSandy Gladden, director of Region IXState Cooperative Education based inRuidoSQ.
Commissioners approved $5,166on Thesday for the program as partof a contract with Region IX, whichsupervises all Head Start programsin the county.
The arrangement clears thecounty of violating the anti-donationclause that prohibits public supportof organizations unless they deliveran identifiable public service inreturn, County Attorney Alan Morelexplained. By going through RegionIX, the contract will be with anothergovernment agency, he said.
The money will be used to installplayground fencing, an outdoor disabled parking sign, two smokealarms and a telephone. It also willpay for utilities, a 10-foot foldingdoor, a grip bar for the disabledaccess to restrooms and a concreteramp for disabled access to the build-ing.
Federal money pays teachersalaries and other program expenses.
A previous proposal that HeadStart share the Capitan SeniorCitizens building with older residentsof the community fell through in spiteof enthusiastic support from officialswith the state Agency on Aging.
Members of the senior organization voted against allowing the preschoolers, ages 3 and 4, to use theircenter, Gladden said.
They were concerned aboutscheduling conflicts with other activities and about the logistics ofrestrooms not designed for small children and not easily supervised, aswell as other physical problems withthe building, she said.
Commissioner Wilton Howell, who had proposed the senior andpreschool arrangement, said he wasvery disappointed, because hebelieved in the benefits from intergenerational in~action.
