Who discovered the Native Americans?

Native Americans are the ‘indigenous’ people of the United States. The people that were here

before the European explorers and settlers arrived.

Native Americans live in every part of the land. They lived in groups known as tribes. Each tribe

had a different language and culture. Some were nomadic, moving from one place to another.

Others were hunters and gatherers, while others were farmers, cultivating much of their own

food. When Christopher Columbus arrived in North America, he thought he has sailed the

world and reached the country of India. So, he called the native American people Indians, a

mistake that has stuck around for hundreds of years!

What is Indigenous Peoples Day?

In America, this is a bank holiday which promotes Native American culture and honours the history of

the indigenous peoples. Indigenous means ‘native’ or ‘original’. The term indigenous peoples, refers

to people that were originally living in a place.

Indigenous People day was first honoured in Berkeley, CA, in 1992. The year 1992 was significant

because it marked the 500 hundred year anniversary, since Christopher Columbus discovered America.

It is an important day to recognise as it draws attention to the story of Christopher Columbus and helps

people understand the value that existed before the USA Colonization.

Who were the Native Americans and how did they live?
