The National Library of Medicine released a new versionof My NCBI in May, 2011. This quick (3-min) tutorial will get you up to speed on using the new interface to create and maintain “My Bibliography”, the tool needed to manage publications in the eRA Commons.

Some things remain the same. You still access My NCBI via the “Sign In” linkfrom PubMed’s homepage.

Login using either your Username & PW

OR via the eRA Login option

Remember:If you’ve NEVER created a My NCBI account, theeasiest option is to login using your eRA Login. This choice automatically creates a My NCBIaccount that is linked to your eRA Commons account. If you already have a My NCBI account, you can link it to your Commons account using the “Linked Account”tool in My NCBI Preferences.

Your personal identification on the PubMed Homepage lets you know you’re signed in to the system.

The new My NCBI interface displays a number of “widgets”, i.e.boxes that do various tasks. Defaults include (but not limited to):• PubMed Search• Saved Searches• Collections• My BibliographyUsers can choose to add and/or delete widgets to customize theirMy NCBI page, placing tools they use most here and getting ridof those they find unhelpful.

This box… it’s a widget.

Add and/or delete widgetsusing these buttons .

To build and/or add to “My Bibliography”:Run a search in PubMed to yield desired results. You can run this search either from the “Search NCBI databases” widget (w/PubMed selected inthe dropdown box) in My NCBI, or you can start in PubMed itself. In this example, the search is run using the widget.

Results appear PubMed.

Select the citation(s) that you want to addto your “My Bibliography”.

Click on the dropdown arrow next to the“Send to” option.Choose the radio button “My Bibliography”.Click the “Add to My Bibliography” button.

Verify your selection andclick on the “Save” button.

You will then be taken back to the display screenin PubMed of the citation(s) you chose to add to your “My Bibliography”.To verify the addition(s) to your “My Bibliography”visit My NCBI (click on link)…

… and note the addition(s) to your list.

As in the past, citations added to “My Bibliography” immediately update in the corresponding “Publications” list in eRA Commons. This allows you to select those needed for quarterly reports, future applications, etc.
