A merican Royalty The Kennedys Fash-ion amp Celebrity Photographs by MarkShaw showcases timeless images ofJohn F and Jacqueline Kennedy TheMuseum of Art exhibition will be the
first museum show to exclusively feature the criticallyacclaimed work of Mark Shaw Museum staff workedwith the Monroe Gallery of Photography in Santa FeNew Mexico and the Mark Shaw PhotographicArchives to select the 50 prints in the exhibitionwhich can only be seen in Utica
Shaw (1922-69) recorded an era and produced exqui-site and unforgettable images that symbolize 1960sAmerica Shaw originally photographed Mrs Kennedyfor LIFE magazine in 1959 He subsequently devel-oped a close friendship with her and the family result-ing in extraordinary access to their inner circle Duringthe following four years Shaw captured the Kennedyfamily at their most relaxed in Hyannis Port on thecampaign trail in West Virginia at their first properfamily home in Georgetown and in the White HouseShaw became the Kennedysrsquo unofficial family photog-rapher and his timeless images included in the exhibi-tion capture some of their most intimate and candidmoments
Only two weeks before John F Kennedy was assassi-nated Jacqueline Kennedy wrote a note to Shaw oneof many thanking him for photographs of her with her3-year-old son John F Kennedy Jr They really shouldbe in the National Gallery I have them propped up inour Sitting Room now and everyone who comes insays the one of me and John looks like a Caravag-giomdashand the one of John reflected in the table like some wonderful strange poetic Matisserdquo Images from this photo shoot will aloso be onview in the Museum
As a leading fashion photographer who began working for LIFE in 1952 Shaw spent 16 years with the magazine and is credited with 27 coverphotographs His images were included in more than 100 stories showcasing the magazines European fashion collections Vanity FairHarpers Bazaar and Mademoiselle all featured Shawrsquos photographs and he was one of the first photographers to capture fashion on the run-ways and backstage at the couture shows The fashion photography in the exhibition ranges from models in glorious gowns to behind-the-scenes imagesof the embodi-ment of highfashion CocoChanel
Decades afterhis deathShawrsquos photo-graphs continueto be publishedregularly inbooks and maga-zines Many ofthe celebrityicons Shaw pho-tographed will beincluded in theexhibition Pablo Picasso Brigitte Bardot Grace Kelly and Yves St Lau-rent Also featured in the exhibition are candid photographs of Audrey Hepburn originally shot for LIFE in 1953 during the filming of themovie Sabrina These images which show a carefree and relaxed Hep-burn had been lost after Mark Shawrsquos death and were only rediscovered in 2005
American Royalty The Kennedys Fashion amp Celebrity Photographs byMark Shaw is sponsored by New York Central Mutual Insurance Company The exhibition will be on view through May 4 2014

The Voyage of LifeEmbarks on National Tour
T he Voyage of Life (1839-40) is considered Hudson River Schoolartist Thomas Colersquos greatest achievement The MWPAI Museumof Art purchased Colersquos original four-part allegorical series in
1955 and it is among the most popular artworks in the Museum of Artcollection Since being acquired the series has left the building onlytwice
The remarkable series will now be shared with a larger audience as partof a Museum-organized touring exhibition The exhibition Thomas Coleand The Voyage of Life will demonstrate in dramatic visual terms the cul-tural significance of these monumental pictures The exhibition also in-cludes a number of the most important preliminary landscape and figurestudies Cole made for the series as well as a selection of the drawingsprints and photographs the series directly inspired some of which havenever previously been published or exhibited and are virtually unknown inthe field of Thomas Cole scholarship
MWPAI Museum of Art Director Emeritus Paul Schweizer is the curator ofthis traveling exhibit Over the last two years Dr Schweizer has under-
taken extensive new research on Thomas Cole and The Voyage of LifeHis findings will be published in a richly illustrated catalogue that exploresthe deeper meaning of the imagery examines the influence the series ex-erted on American culture and tells the remarkable story behind the cre-ation of the four paintings and their fascinating 175-year history
In May The Voyage of Life will begin its own voyage as it visits four ven-ues over the next two years the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati OhioJune through September 2014 the Chrysler Museum of Art Norfolk Vir-ginia October 2014 through January 2015 The St Louis Art Museum StLouis Missouri May through August 2015 and The Dixon Museum andGardens Memphis Tennessee January through April 2016
