From the comfort of his retirementfrom the village cricket team,

Peter is looking at some statistics.

First, he looks at the number of bouncers he bowled in his last

thirty innings.

Can you find the mean,

median and mode here?

Bouncer count

0, 1, 2, 1, 0, 0, 3, 2, 2, 4, 1, 7, 1,

1, 0, 3, 2, 1, 1, 0, 4, 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 0,

1, 1, 1

Answers

Bouncer Question: mean = 1.63, median = 1, mode = 1.

Discrete data given as Raw Data.

Now Peter takes a look at the number of ducks, x, scored on

both sides in his last 149 games.

Can you find the mean, median and mode here?

He draws up a frequency table.

(A duck is a score of 0(!))

Answers

Ducks Question: mean = 2.85, median = 3, mode = 3.

Discrete data given as Frequency Table.

Now Peter turns to the length of time,

x, in minutes for which he batted in

his last 117 appearances.

Note: the symbol – here means ‘up to but not including.’

Can you find the mean, median and mode here?

Peter Minutes Question: mean = 25.9, median = 26.0, modal class = 20-30.

Continuous data given as Grouped Frequency Table.

To make a comparison, Peter looks at the length of time x in minutes for which his friend Chris batted in his last 117 games.

The values of x here, however, are given ‘to the nearest minute’.

Chris Minutes Question: mean = 25.2, median = 24.9, modal class = 20-29.

‘Time in minutes’ is continuous data. ‘Time to nearest minute’ is discrete data.

Data given as Grouped Frequency Table.Treat as continuous data,

but care is needed with true class intervals.

Finally Peter counts up and finds that he has played in the

league debuts of 109 players.He draws up a table

of their ages on debut.

Age on Debut Question: mean = 25.9, median = 26.0, modal class = 20-30.

‘Age in years’ is continuous data.‘Age in completed years’ is discrete data.

Data given as Grouped Frequency Table.Treat as continuous data,

but care is needed with true class intervals.
