Mr. Z about to catch some “Air”

Mr. Z’s “Riding One Home!”

Identify the features of a wave

AIM: What are features of waves?

Amplitude, frequency, hertz, wavelength, wave

speed

AIM: What are features of waves?

What is a wave?

An energy disturbance traveling place to place

What are the two types of waves we are studying

Transverse and longitudinal

,

AIM: What are features of waves?

The two types of mechanical waves:

Transverse

Longitudinal

AIM: What are features of waves?

TRANSVERSE WAVES

EXAMPLE: “waves made with the rope”

EXAMPLE: “water waves”

AIM: What are features of waves?

TRANSVERSE WAVES

The particles of the medium typically move perpendicular to the movement of the wave!

AIM: What are features of waves?

TRANSVERSE WAVES

The particles of the medium typically move perpendicular to the movement of the wave!

AIM: What are features of waves?

LONGITUDINAL WAVES

The particles of the medium typically move parallel to the movement of the wave!

AIM: What are features of waves?

Draw a transverse wave on the board

Identify CRESTS and TROUGHS

15-1 Transparency 57: Transverse Wave

AIM: What are features of waves?

Draw and label crest and trough .

AIM: What are features of waves?

Draw and label the crest and trough

AIM: What are features of waves?

The highest point of the wave?

the crest.

lowest point is called ?

the trough.

AIM: What are features of waves?

Waves can be characterized in terms of three basic features

1. Amplitude

2. Wavelength

3. Frequency

AIM: What are features of waves?

Height of the wave. Distance between the the crest and the “normal” position

AIM: What are features of waves?

Draw three waves:

The first will have a 1 cm amplitude, the second will have a 2 cm amplitude, and the third will have an amplitude of 3 cm.

AIM: What are features of waves?

Draw and label the crest and trough and amplitude..

AIM: What are features of waves?

Draw and label the crest and trough and amplitude..

AIM: What are features of waves?

Amplitude

Draw and label the crest and trough and amplitude..

AIM: What are features of waves?

Amplitude

Draw and label the crest and trough and amplitude..

AIM: What are features of waves?

Amplitude

Are all the Amplitudes on the same wave identical?

YES THEY HAVE TO BE!

AIM: What are features of waves?

Amplitude

AIM: What are features of waves?

wavelength

The distance between the crest of one wave and the crest of the next wave.

AIM: What are features of waves?

The distance between the trough of one wave and the trough of the next wave.

How else could you define wavelength?

AIM: What are features of waves?

Draw and label the wavelength, crest and trough.

AIM: What are features of waves?

Draw and label the wavelength, crest and trough

AIM: What are features of waves?

wavelength

Draw and label the wavelength, crest and trough

AIM: What are features of waves?

wavelength

Are both wavelengths the same ?

Yes!

All wavelengths on the same wave are the same length

wavelength

AIM: What are features of waves?

Crest

Trough

AIM: What are features of waves?

Label the Crest, Trough, Amplitude, rest position, & wavelength of this transverse wave

QUICK REVIEW: Longitudinal Wave

Where are the compressions ?

QUICK REVIEW of Longitudinal Wave

Where are the rarefactions ?

What is the wavelength of this Longitudinal Wave?

The number of “compete wave cycles” that pass a certain point in a given amount of time.

Usually measured in the number of complete waves per second

AIM: What are features of waves?

Don’t confuse wavelength with a complete wave cycle !!!!!!!

Definition: The number of complete wave cycles that pass a given point in one second is the wave's frequency.

“What is a complete wave cycle?”

A complete wave cycle is measured as

“from one crest (or trough) to the next” AND

Crest

Crest

How many of those cycles pass by in a one second interval of time

Frequency is measured in “HERTZ”

Definition of Hertz:

•unit used to measure the frequency of a wave

•a measure of the number of complete waves per second

•What does 15,000 hertz mean?

All waves move at a specific speed.

The speed of a wave =

(frequency) x (wavelength)

AIM: What are features of waves?

The speed of wave measures how many meters it travels per

second

The hertz (frequency) of a wave measure how many waves (or crests) there are each second
