General Definition:• Mobile Learning is any kind of learning interaction

that is delivered by mobile technology and accessed by learners at a time and in a location of their choosing

• M-Learning is a form of existing d-Learning (distance learning) and e-Learning (electronic learning)

There many types of devices that make up mobile learning provision such as:•Personal digital assistant (PDAs)•Smartphones•Mobile phones

How mobile devices can be used for learning?

Benefits of Mobile Learning

• Enrich the learning strategy • Make the learning more flexible and accessible• Enhance the learner productivity and

effectiveness• New communication channel between the

learners and the instructor• Facilitate collaboration through synchronous

and asynchronous communication

Characteristics of Mobile Learning

Key characteristics of m-learning that emerged were as follows:

• Enables knowledge building by learners in different contexts

• Enables learners to construct understandings• Mobile technology often changes the pattern of

learning/work activity• The context of mobile learning is about more

• May make it easier to cheat.• May require media to be reformatted or offered

in multiple formats.• Might render some content outdated because of

rapid upgrades• Could require training for non-technical students

Why should we redesign the website to mobile version?

• To recognize the essential role of mobility and communication in the process of learning

• To indicate the importance of context in establishing meaning

• Mobile device interface design is more restrictive than desktop interface design

MOBILE DESIGN = SMALL AND TARGETED

When should We use it?

If it:–Provides some clear advantages to the learning

process–Appropriates to the instructor and his/her

learners

Mobile and Desktop Experience Differences

Desktop MobileContinuous interaction on a single task.

Ex: Compose a memo.Brief focused interactions.

Ex: Respond to a tweet or SMS message.

Less intrusive interruptions. Ex: Receive call on phone while reviewing

mail on laptop.

More intrusive interruptions. Ex: Receive call while reviewing mail on

smartphone.

Infrequently changing context. Ex: Using a spreadsheet application at desk.

Frequently changing environmental context.

Ex: Use phone during air travel

Good response time. Ex: Highly immersive gaming.

Relatively poor response time. Ex: Map updates.

Less social. Ex: Relative importance of office

productivity applications.

More social. Ex: Relative importance of phone, texting,

sharing applications.
