Definitions
General Definition:• Mobile Learning is any kind of learning interaction
that is delivered by mobile technology and accessed by learners at a time and in a location of their choosing
• M-Learning is a form of existing d-Learning (distance learning) and e-Learning (electronic learning)

Types of Mobile Devices
There many types of devices that make up mobile learning provision such as:•Personal digital assistant (PDAs)•Smartphones•Mobile phones

Benefits of Mobile Learning
• Enrich the learning strategy • Make the learning more flexible and accessible• Enhance the learner productivity and
effectiveness• New communication channel between the
learners and the instructor• Facilitate collaboration through synchronous
and asynchronous communication

Characteristics of Mobile Learning
Key characteristics of m-learning that emerged were as follows:
• Enables knowledge building by learners in different contexts
• Enables learners to construct understandings• Mobile technology often changes the pattern of
learning/work activity• The context of mobile learning is about more
than time and space10/04/143

Challenges of Mobile Learning
• May make it easier to cheat.• May require media to be reformatted or offered
in multiple formats.• Might render some content outdated because of
rapid upgrades• Could require training for non-technical students
and faculty.

Why should we redesign the website to mobile version?
• To recognize the essential role of mobility and communication in the process of learning
• To indicate the importance of context in establishing meaning
• Mobile device interface design is more restrictive than desktop interface design
MOBILE DESIGN = SMALL AND TARGETED
All rights reserved for Deanship of eLearning and Distance Education 201313 10/04/1434
When should We use it?
If it:–Provides some clear advantages to the learning
process–Appropriates to the instructor and his/her
learners

Mobile and Desktop Experience Differences
Desktop MobileContinuous interaction on a single task.
Ex: Compose a memo.Brief focused interactions.
Ex: Respond to a tweet or SMS message.
Less intrusive interruptions. Ex: Receive call on phone while reviewing
mail on laptop.
More intrusive interruptions. Ex: Receive call while reviewing mail on
smartphone.
Infrequently changing context. Ex: Using a spreadsheet application at desk.
Frequently changing environmental context.
Ex: Use phone during air travel
Good response time. Ex: Highly immersive gaming.
Relatively poor response time. Ex: Map updates.
Less social. Ex: Relative importance of office
productivity applications.
More social. Ex: Relative importance of phone, texting,
sharing applications.

– The user’s characteristics, such as age, nationality, special needs or disabilities
– The user’s degree of familiarity with mobile devices, or need for guidance in the use of their functions
– The user’s motivation and interest in learning using mobile devices
– The usage context of the application

Guidelines for User InterfaceMenus
– Accessible and intuitive– Simple and Consistence– Reduce the number of menu buttons (no more than 5-
7 buttons)– For touch phones, clickable area should be at least 1cm
X 1cm– The design should allow the touch screen user to make
the navigation button larger if required

―Include navigation on the homepage of your mobile website.
―Organize navigation buttons in order of importance and relevance to the needs of mobile visitors
―Keep navigation menu simple by including only minimal navigation at the top of the page
―Provide short and descriptive navigation menu titles―Add padding around links to make them easily clickable―Turn important links into buttons

Guidelines for Multimedia
10/04/1434
33
― Limit the Use of Images― All images should be small and should be in
either .jpeg or .gif format.― The entire image should be viewable with no scrolling
(Image width should not exceed 300px)― Avoid large or high resolution images― If background image is used, it should be simple and
light in color.

― Beware of Flash that isn’t compatible on some devices― Optimize the file size of video and audio― Don’t automatically download video/audio files until
requested (for bandwidth savings)― Don’t auto-play, it’s annoying (don’t do this even
outside of mobile devices)― If you have videos on your site, offer a textual
description of what the video is about

―Design the content in the form of learning objects―Each object should be tied to learning outcomes―Develop learning activities to cater different learning
styles―Learning materials must be designed in manageable
chunks―Only the relevant information should be shown

―Don’t create mobile content in Word or PowerPoint using the default templates and font sizes.
― Create a specific template for the iPhone, based on the 11”x 7.3” page size.
―Use a font size no smaller than 12 pt to ensure readability.―if you are using Word reduce the margins so that text and
graphics are closer to the edges of the screen.―Convert your content to PDF format.

Best Practices
• Description: Include a list of learning objectives in your course description.
• Active learning pathway: Tell a story of the learning your students will do with your outline, posts, and assignments.
• Display titles: Use short titles for posts and assignments so students see the most important information at a glance.
• Posts: Use posts to add meaning and context to learning materials.
• Assignments: Begin your assignments with action verbs. Assignments will form a to-do list for your students.
• All Materials: You can also add materials using the All Materials feature.
• Preview your course: Preview your course on aniPhone, before sharing it with your students.
