HOW DOES AN ORGANISM GET BIGGER?

Mitosis Notes

Asexual Reproduction – offspring are produced that are genetically identical to the parent

Mitosis – the asexual reproduction process of cell division

Interphase

What happens?

Chromosomes are present but not visible

DNA replicates How the cell normally

looks

INTERPHASE

When the cell performs its function (example: muscle cells contract and expand during interphase to help you move)

Cell gets bigger (makes more cytoplasm and organelles) Cell copies DNA

Part of mitosis?

Interphase is part of the cell’s life cycle; but it is NOT a stage of mitosis

Prophase

What happens?

Nuclear membrane disappears

Chromosomes appear Centrioles begin to

move

PROPHASE

DNA (which was loose in nucleus) gets tightly wound into chromosomes

Nucleus dissolves

Metaphase

What happens?

Spindle fibers line the chromosomes up in the middle of the cell

METAPHASE

Chromosomes line up in the center of the cell Spindle fibers attach to each chromosome

Anaphase

What happens?

The spindle fibers pull the chromosomes apart at the middle

ANAPHASE

Chromosomes are pulled to opposite ends of the cell

Telophase

What happens?

Nuclear membrane reappears

Chromosomes disappear

The cell begins to be pinched in the middle

TELOPHASE

A new nucleus forms around each set of chromosomes. This produces one cell with two nuclei

Cytokinesis

What happens?

The cell is pinched in half Two identical cells are

made

CYTOKINESIS

A new cell membrane (and cell wall in plants) is created between the two new cells.

TWO IDENTICAL CELLS ARE FORMED

The Phases of Mitosis

Interphase

1. Prophase

2. Metaphase

3. Anaphase

4. Telophase

5. Cytokinesis

Mitosis Notes

During cell division …

It is essential that the DNA is replicated The number of chromosomes NEVER

changes Each daughter cell gets its own copy of the

DNA
