NEED FOR COMMUNITY PSYCHIARTY SERVICES

• To break the social discrimination syndrome.

• Institutionalized psychiatric services are more expensive.

• Insufficient man power.

EXTEND OF PROBLEM IN INDIA

• POPULATION 1.7 Billion • PREVALENCE OF PSYCHIATRIC DISORDER 62/1000 population• SEVERE MENTAL ILLNESS Point Prevalence – 10-20%/1000 population. Incidence - 35/100,000 population.

• NUROSIS AND PSYCHOSOMATIC DISORDRES

Point prevalence – 4-5%• PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS IN CHILDREN

Point prevalence - 2-3%• MENTAL RETARDATION

Point prevalence - 20 million children• PSYCHIATRIC OPD ATTENDANCE IN

Govt. hospital- 6.63 million/yr

Private hospital- 4.83 million/yr

Total OPD attendance – 8.49 million/yr

EXISTING MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES IN INDIA

• No. of Government hospital in India – 40

• Total health beds in India -10,70,180.

• Psychiatric beds in India - 26,000

MAN POWER AVAILABLE IN INDIA

• Psychiatrist - 4000 ie,1 psychiatrist for 1000 mentally ill clients.

• Psychiatric social workers – 2000.

• Psychiatric nurses - 5000-7000.

• PG centers - Nearly 60.
