Remember that you are dust and to dust
you shall return.Ash Wednesday ser-
vice (quoting Genesis 3:19) in the Book
of Common Prayer, page 265.
Terror and comfort. These words above,
said with the imposition of ashes, epitomize Lent as a time of terror
and comfort. Terror is that feeling we get when we hit a patch of
black ice and realize, as the car is spinning, that we have no control.
Comfort is that feeling we get when, as were spinning, we pray and
realize that God is there with us on this dangerous, out-of-control
course.
Lent reminds us that we are mortal, that we are not in control,
that we are going to die. The illusion that our life is orderly and pre-
dictable is just thatan illusion. To face the inevitability of our own
death and the death of our loved ones strikes terror in our hearts.
How would we survive without those we love? How can we face the
truth of our own nonexistence in this beautiful world? Thats where
the comfort comes in. God is with us. Before were born, with
every breath and heartbeat, as we die, and after weve gone from this
earth. God is with us.
We are not in control. We are going to die. Terrifying. God
always holds us in the palm of Gods hand, never deserting us. God
is there for us even after we die. Comforting. Lent asks us to think
about what terrifies and comforts us, not because its good to be
scared but because its good to remember that we need God and God
is there for us.

This month of March we walk the road of
terror and comfort with Jesus. We wave palm
branches as he triumphantly enters Jerusalem. We
watch while he experiences terror and finally com-
fort during the long night in the Garden of Geth-
semane. We shout Crucify him! when Pilate asks
what should be done with Jesus. We deny knowing
him, terrified for our own necks. We wring our
hands and watch, comfortless, as our hopes die with
Jesus on the cross. Lent and life require us to jour-
ney through terror and comfort. Perhaps its walking
through terror and comfort that allow us to feel au-
thentic Easter joy. My prayer for all of us is that,
when we feel the terrors of life, we may also feel the
comfort of Gods presence.Pastor Sally

St. Francis Book Group
On Thursday, March 14th, St. Francis Book
Club is discussing a book that will warm your heart
and challenge your thinking. Book Club will meet
from 6:308:00 to discuss The
Faith Club: a Muslim, a Christian
and a Jew; Three women searching
for Understanding. This book comes
highly recommended and promises
to provide lots of opportunity for dis-
cussion.
From the summary at Amazon.com:
A groundbreaking book about Americans
searching for faith and mutual respect, The Faith
Club weaves the story of three women, their threereligions, and their urgent quest to understand one
another.
When an American Muslim woman befriends
two other mothers, one Jewish and one Christian,
they decide to educate their children about their re-
spective religions. None of them guessed their regu-
lar meetings would provide life-changing answers
and form bonds that would forever alter their strug-
gles with prejudice, fear, and anger. Personal, power-ful, and compelling, The Faith Club forces readers to
face the tough questions about their own religions.
Several copies are available through St. Louis
County Library (www.slcl.org). Amazon.com has
paperback versions, new and used, and a Kindle ver-
sion as well (www.amazon.com) See Kevin Selle
for more information.
Smile.
While driving in Pennsylvania, a family caught up to an Amish carriage. The owner of the carriage
obviously had a sense of humor, because attached to the back of the carriage was a hand printed sign,
"Energy efficient vehicle: Runs on oats and grass. Caution: Do not step in exhaust."
******
Give me a sense of humor, Lord,
Give me the grace to see a joke,
To get some humor out of life,
And pass it on to other folk!

Do this in remembrance of me.
Modern Westerners often miss the full range of meaning in the word re-
membrance as it is used in the Bible. Often we get lost somewhere between making
it into nostalgia (on the emotive end of the spectrum) and a turning to an academic
study of the past (on the cognitive or intellectual end). It is also not a rote re-
enactment. Remembrance, in the Bible, is not just what goes on in the mind. Re-
membrance also happens to the body and the senses, and often captures us precisely
through these means. Anyone who has ever smelled a kitchen aroma exactly like one
from the kitchen at home long ago knows how this works. In the moment, past andpresent merge into one reality, and the body and the senses do the recollecting in
ways that the mind alone cannot. That is what remembrance is like in the Bible.
Holding fast to this meaning of remembrance is crucial to our making sense
of the Eucharist. The remembering which Jesus asks from us is not a mind-game. It
also engages our selves, our souls and bodies. (Rite I Eucharist, Prayer 1) It is a
deep and holistic remembrance and not merely a remembrance. It is a here-and-
now reality rooted in the past.
With Holy Week and Easter fast approaching, this understanding of remem-
brance can inform how we approach the rites during these solemn days. Given theirfull force, these rites can transcend mere emotional pietism or attempts at historical
re-enactment. The great song at the beginning of the Easter Vigil, the Exsultet, does
not sing, There once was a night , when God freed Israel from captivity, brought
salvation and holiness of life to believers, and when Christ broke the bonds of death.
No. The words are, This is the night.
The reality is here and now.

A LENTEN QUIET DAY EXPLORING THE SPIRITUALITY OF THE ANGLICAN ROSARY
Saturday, March 9, 2012 8:30 am.3:00 pm.
CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL
It was not in the tempest, neither in the earthquake, nor in the fire, but in the ensuing quiet that Elijah
heard the small voice of The Lord. Jesus often got away from the press of the crowd to a quiet place to com-mune with The Father. And, the solitude of the Desert was a place of communicating with the Divine for the
earliest monastic fathers. We all need and long for the opportunity to get away to that quiet place where we
are open to the Divine voice. In contrast with the Roman Catholic Rosary with its tradition of fixed prayers of
devotion to The Blessed Virgin Mary, Anglican Prayer BeadsThe Anglican Rosary - are a clear template on
which to overlay our prayer. Drawing deeply on Celtic Spirituality, The Anglican Rosary has a structure
based on the form of the Cross, the completeness of The Circle, with the Invitatory of the Daily Office drawing
us to enter into a journey in sacred time through the seven days of creation and the seven seasons of The
Church Year. It enfolds us on our journey, assists us to center our thoughts on prayer, and to listen to God in
the quietness of our hearts. Here we experience a thin place, a place where time and timelessness, where
the Divine and temporal intersect. Anglican Prayer Beads - the word bead itself is derived from the OldEnglish word for Prayer -- are virtually a tool forHolding Your Prayers in Your Hands.
A Lenten Quiet Day scheduled for Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Christ Church Cathedral will provide an
introduction to Anglican Prayer Beads. We will explore the spirituality of the Anglican Rosary. We will dis-
cuss the Anglican Rosarys, design, and relationship to other Christian forms of prayer ropes and prayer beads,
such as used by Roman Catholics and the Orthodox. We will learn how to make and use them, through shar-
ing in various prayer forms both contemplative and liturgical. For those already experienced in praying with
the Anglican Rosary some new experiences may be encountered through Praying The Labyrinth, The Way of
The Cross, and Meditation on The Blessed Sacrament.
The Retreat will be led by Br. Franklin Kline OP, Anglican Order of Preachers (Dominicans), a Cathe-dral Parishioner and Episcopal School for Ministry Alumnus.

Youth Group CalendarOzark Hills that had challenged me to share this
outdoor adventure with Rosie.
I soon found out the hills were much more
steep with another person on my back, even some-
one as light as Rosie. I made my way down hill to
a quiet valley by going from tree to tree to retard
the speed of the descent and to help circumvent the
thick growth of underbrush.
Once in the heart of the valley, we took in
the blissful peace and benediction it afforded. Af-
ter we had relaxed and drank in the pleasure of
beauty of that fall day, we realized that we would
have to go back the same way we had de-
scended. The ascent became the problem of
climbing out of the woods. I was exhausted and ofcourse Rosie needed to come back out of the
woods with me. The downhill descent was a mere
cake walk compared to the ascent that now stood
between my nearly depleted physical stamina and
the comfort of our cabin.
I had never thought of myself as middle
aged because of my rigorous physical programs
but now going uphill at a 90 degree angle with
Rosie strapped to my back, my legs strained witheach step and my heart began pumping like an un-
dersized air compressor. All I could think of was
the tallest tree on top of this hill; I could hear the
sounds of birds carried along on the soft gentle
winds that filtered through the dappled shade of
the woods.
Yes I had miscalculated the weight of my
gentle burden but as she leaned confidently upon
my neck I knew her clasp represented the strength
of our union that I could always count upon never
to betray my heart and heaven would always show
us a way to overcome any obstacle that threatened
to pull us asunder.

Consider This,
Recently, my sister forwarded this
from a blogger friend of hers here in St.
Louis. My sister thought it would speak to
me, and it did. I hope that it will speak to you as
well.
One of the things I love about the Celtic
way of reckoning time is that the seasonal
changes are subtle. Spring begins, not when
the days are actually longer than the nights,
but when the energy has just begun to shift
toward light.
We have to dig deep and believe in spring
when the earth is frozen and the ground is
hard. But out of sight, seeds are stirring in
response to the gradually brightening sun.
I love this reminder that the sun is shining
longer each day; that life is gently shifting towards
the light, sometimes not so noticeably, but shifting
nonetheless. I love the promise that creation holds
for us at this dark time: things will get better, things
will get warmer, lighter, brighter. The seasons will
change and we, we hope, will change with them.
Because I am convinced that God created all, and
created us to work together, I feel a kinship with
those underground seeds as they, unconsciously,
search for the sun that gives them food, heat, andlight. I stretch, too, to reach the Son who gives me
warmth, light and love.
Similarly, change in our lives typically
starts as a little shift of consciousness deep in
our psyches.
The change may not be noticeable at
first, even to ourselves. But it begins at that
moment when we soften toward our own na-
tures, when the growing light of awareness
shines upon an old pattern, and instead of
pushing it away in shame or fear or loath-
ing, we softly smile inside as we recognize
an old friend.
We show ourselves compassion.
We become willing to sit with the formerly
rejected pieces of who we are. And so we are re-
newed. 1
For me, that little shift of consciousness,
and the growing light of awareness are gifts of the
Holy Spirit, inspirations that both calm and energize
me for the work I need to do for renewal, for growth,
for flowering. Next month, Ill tie this thinking to
Pastor Sallys Lenten message of caring for our-selves. In the meantime, may you see, feel, and
smell the earth awakening around you and in you as
well.

Prayer for St. Francis
We pray for the witness, renewal, and growth of our parish family. Living
God, infuse us with your love. Enable us to proclaim the good news of Je-
sus Christ to all whom we meet through our actions, our thoughts, our
words. Make St. Francis' Church a place of invitation and welcome, a safe
harbor and a beacon of the light of Christ. Amen.
