Classic example of a communication breakdown Germans intercepted un-coded Russian messages Two Russian Commanders failed to find out what the other

was doing Germans replaced passive commanders with aggressive

ones in the middle of the fight Russians were completely outwitted and lost everything 95,000 Russians troops were captured in the action; an

estimated 30,000 were killed or wounded, only around 10,000 escaped. The Germans suffered fewer than 20,000 casualties and, in addition to prisoners captured over 500 guns. Sixty trains were required to transport captured equipment to Germany.

GallipoliGallipoliTraining occurred in the Egyptian desert, surrounded by sand and helpful Egyptian allies and resources in easy reach.

Actual Fighting was in mountainous country and dry scrub with the Turks sinking every supply ship that made an attempt to get supplies to the English

The Gallipoli Disaster, 1915 Turks had excellent gun

positions in the high cliffs

English plan was to make the Turks run out of ammunition by sending unarmed Australians against their guns.

Untrained for mountainous fighting and led by idiot commanders, wave after wave of Australians died, but the Turks held firm.

Eventually the English gave up and retreated.

More men died during the retreat,

T. E. Lawrence & the “Arab Revolt”,

1916-18

This man is an English nobleman who prefers the Bedouin way of life. Still, he helps his country by convincing the Bedouin tribes to help the English against the Turks.

The Arab The Arab RevoltRevolt

Lawrence of Arabia and two Arabian princes led the Arab horsemen to make hit and run raids on Turkish supply lines, the main Arabian railroad and several forts. They successfully hampered the enemy.

T. E. Lawrence & Prince Faisal at Versailles, 1918-

19Promised independence and support for their help in the war, the Arabians gain nothing from the British who immediately forget their promises.

Thesis includes: -Position (Main Idea)-Organizational CategoriesDirective Words (write these down):•Analyze (explain by breaking down)•Assess (decide significance)•Compare/Contrast (differences/similarities)•Describe (give a FULL account of, create a picture)•Discuss (consider other points of view)•Evaluate (make a judgment based on various points of view)•Explain (clearly give the reason or cause)

Examples:

Battles:The Battle of the Somme was one of the most significant battles of WWI due to the loss of life incurred, the horrific experience of trench warfare, and the new weapons that were employed.

Songs:These songs from WWI reveal many truths about the British population at this time including the nationalistic feelings of the young people, the naiveté of the soldiers going off to war, and the mistaken belief that the war would end within months.
