Tsunami – Japan

Japan was hit by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake on March 11, 2011, that triggered a deadly tsunami in the country's north.

March 11 natural disaster and human tragedy:

• 9.0 magnitude earthquake

• Tsunami: 130 ft max wave height

Tsunami Debris is adding to the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”…An estimated 1.5 Million Tons has reached the US West Coast thus far.

•1780 reports were received to date (July 2014)•1235 reports from land•Approximately 175 reports from vessels to-date (July 2014) not including Japanese training vessels

•Additional 370 report from Japanese training vessels

•Total of 545 reports from vessels

• Ships, International Government agency, and public outreach will continue. Seattle PMO will still distribute forms.

• Research groups encouraged to participate.• Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, and Alaska State emergency

agencies have contingency plans in place (especially for hazardous debris).
